Discussion about
Moving to the city with my Great Dane. I know people have dogs in the city but Great Dane's are considered Giant Breeds which is hindering my success at finding an apartment. I work in Midtown, currently staying with a friend in Midtown and I know thats not where I want my dog to be. I have considered Upper East Side, Upper West Side, and parts of Brooklyn as Prospect park seems to be a great place to take the dog. Anyone see any Great Dane dogs around these areas? also if any apartments don't have weight limits please share. Thank you
I'd suggest looking up Great Dane owner 'groups' in NYC.. maybe meetup.com, and asking them what they recommend. I see a fair number of Great Dane's on the upper east side considering.. but overall not many. Good luck!
I strongly recommend The Brooklyner, 111 Lawrence Street in Downtown Brooklyn, if it's within your budget. 100% dog friendly, including a pet room where you can wash your pup.
No weight no breed limits.
Right now the R train does not go to Manhattan, but once it's fixed it will. Otherwise there are many other trains here.
Reasonable walk to Ft Greene park for off leash play 9 pm - 9 am, we go there daily, also walk to Cadman Plaza, also the Promenade. Prospect Park is too far for early morning romps, we do go to DUMBO's dog park when we have time.
Check Broadwall Management - apts online at no fee - very friendly dog buildings - size not a problem
Great Danes are awesome city dogs. We live on 157th/Broadway and there are two Great Danes that go to our dog park. This city is so dog friendly I don't think you can go wrong. Almost every part of the city has several dog parks for him/her to run.
come on....
would you really recommend that someone get a great dane?
rather than a smaller dog?
Do they have Great Danes in C0lumbia C0unty? Or not big enough, so cows and donkeys.
What do they have in GOthamsBOro? Poodles and pit bulls?
Yes, we do have poodles and pit bulls.
Great Danes are fantastic apartment dogs. While, like most dogs, they do need regular daily walks/runs/outdoor play, they are incredibly mellow and generally quiet indoors. Unlike some breeds, they are perfectly happy to lay about in a sunny spot. Of course, they do need a bit of room, but nothing extraordinary. Take a walk in Central Park on a nice Saturday/Sunday before 9AM and you'll run into several lovely Great Danes and their owners.
uh oh, New2me is testing c0lumbiac0unty and aboutready. That can be dangerous. Even the slightest disagreement can unleash an Obama/Christie like act of revenge.
What? have a pt bull/Bullmastiff mix. She is huge by NY standards. Probably over 100 lbs. I have never had a single issue with her in any dog park. I feel comfortable enough to bring my toddler. The older children co,e when they're home. Stop creating ridiculous hysteria as you always do. the original poster ill find an excellent home for his family. NYC IS dog friendly.
eliz: You've been on se since May 2009.
More than enough time to see who is worthy of your time and responses. (Creating ridiculous hysteria/drama is her thing.)
My neighbor has a pit bull/mastiff mix. Such a friendly, loving dog.
Have you ever live under an apartment that houses a Great Dane. Believe me, from experience, it sounds like a horse galloping above your head. It's another symptom of the me generation, who want washer/dryers, treadmills, loud music, children, pianos, and huge dogs in their apartments, let the neighbors be damned. It's time to buy a house in the burbs.
RealEstateNY: If those who want any/all of the list that you describe in your comment; buy a house in the suburbs:
Which generation would be left to live in NYC apartments?
the rich one.
Hi C0C0, how much money did you steal from rich people vs scam from poor people?
"Which generation would be left to live in NYC apartments?"
Those with some class and respect who realize there are comprises when living in such close quarter to neighbors. I realize that's an ever shrinking number these days.
RealEstateNY: I understand that there's a need for compromise when living in such close-quarters.
As you describe it, the problem is not generational. The solution can apply to a group of people: any age-group can join that movement.
Much more prevalent among the 40 and under crowd.
RealEstateNY: That Great Dane may have been an exception to the breed's usual laid-back behavior.
New2me described how those dogs love to find a sunny spot and soak up the warmth.
The small, yappy dogs are probably the most annoying.
Hi. I'm a real estate agent and my husband has dog walking service for 23+ years and walks a great Dane named Max, as well as many 100+ lb. dogs. You have lots of options. I specialize in dog friendly rentals. If you don't already have an agent, I'd be happy to help ( azemaitis@CRRNYC.com ). If you do, they need to look for the following: Pet friendly and no weight limit restrictions. Condos are usually best for this. Condo sublets for rentals are also good. Co-ops are the most restrictive I've found, as well as many rental buildings, which almost all have pet and/or weight limits on dogs (though I find great danes more gentle than small breeds). Also, when I bought my first loft in Tribeca, I had a rider put in that there were no restrictions on me having a dog and type (Shar-Pei). Ann Zemaitis, RUTENBERG REALTY 917-676-1950
Oops…said I specialize in dog friendly rentals. Actually, most of what I do is SALES of apartments, but, yes, handle rentals.
