Television shows can work wonders that only our imaginations can imitate. They can take us back to what it was like to live in other eras, creating nostalgia for earlier, simpler days, as does The Andy Griffith Show or I Love Lucy. They can also illustrate lifestyles the average American can only dream of—in this case I’m speaking of Downton Abbey, the PBS television sensation that has captured the minds and hearts of people from all walks of life—including my husband, who has always been a die-hard critic of such shows. There’s something about the Downton Abbey characters, the time period, and their stories that engenders empathy in viewers. And some fans would like to know what it would take thave a home as glamorous as the lavishly decorated Abbey. Something old, something new Huffington Post correspondent Alessandra Wood is one such fan. She paired with interior designer Vi from Tastemaker to put together a modern version of the early 20th century drawing room styles we see on Downton Abbey. Wood explained, “Our goal was to pull some of the historical decorative elements, but to reimagine them for a contemporary setting. The last thing we wanted was to create a space that felt dated.” Wall of books For the walls, Vi chose Wall of Books from Kathy Kuo Home. This recreates the studious feeling of Downton Abbey without requiring you to spend a fortune on books. It sets the tone for the rest of the space with its classical atmosphere. Classical furniture made modern The sofa they selected from Jayson Homes was long and low with a dark green fabric that looks velvet, but could actually be a more modern canvas. Its slick appearance goes well with the short, wide, neoclassical Natural Herald Chair they chose from World Market. It’s rounded back, linen upholstery, and curved legs hint at its origin without making it feel like a piece out of a museum. As a third seat, foot rest, or coffee table, the designers chose a deep purple tufted ottoman from AllModern. Gold accents Of course, no Downton Abbey room would be complete without a few golden accent pieces. Wood and Vi chose a large, ornate gilded mirror, a tall gold lamp, and a black and gold side table to hint at the opulence of the Abbey.
