We're in the process of having the apartment we just purchased renovated and I am wondering whether some of the carpentry work should be re-done. I wanted all of the window sills, surrounds (think that's what it's called), and sills replaced. When I went there the other day I saw that most of the sill returns (I mean the part that meets up with the wall) have a gap of at least 1/4 inch, if not more. I can fit a the door key into some of them. A lot of the moldings which are butt joints also have large gaps between them, some of which are not even cut straight. One of the window vertical moldings has a fill piece of about one inch, I guess because the first piece was cut too short. When I mentioned all this to the contractor he said not to worry, that with putty and paint I would never notice. I do have a contract and am thinking if this is a valid complaint that i should ask to have the work re-done. Is there a way for me to know what an acceptable gap is? I would have thought at most an 1/8 of an inch but realize I may have no idea of what is acceptable. If any one has any info or input, I would appreciate it. [less]
