Discussion about
I recently purchased a co-op in Brooklyn and I am looking to replace the parquet flooring with wood floors. One problem we are running into is the clearance of our metal entry door. Our floor guy had mentioned our solutions are to either rip up the old floor (which apparently has asbestos in the glue and will be a whole other can of worms) or go against the building and trim the height of our front door. I had talked to another flooring guy and he said they could possibly rip up the floors in front of the door and then gently slope it back into the other floors so we can get the clearance. My concern there is being able to feel the slope every time I walk in. I'm sure others have run into this problem before. Any suggestions as to the best way to resolve this?
Hi, I'm having a similar problem - old parquet floors has asbestos in the glue, so the only cost-reasonable way would be to lay the new floors on top. But then including soundproofing there's not much more clearance from the floors to the front door. Does anyone have a good solution to this? Thanks!
If he rips up the floors in front of the door, aren't you still going to have to do all the same filings as if he ripped them up all over the apartment? Or are you just going to see if you can get away with it?
I'm still in the planning stage so I haven't bought the floors yet or ripped anything apart. The current clearance from parquet to bottom of the door is around 11/16". Assuming 2mm soundproofing, and a 1/2" floor, that will leave me with slightly less than 1/8" clearance. Is that too little?
And besides trimming the door, what option do I have? Can I sand down the front door area parquet thus creating a slight slope?
You can't sand the new floors, particularly not a 1/2" thick floor. You might make a tiled entry landing and transition to hardwood. Trimming the door is not a particularly big deal. What about other transitions -- i.e. to kitchen and bathroom(s)? It is doubtful that the door and existing floors are 100% level and plumb, so you can't assume that a 1/8" clearance will hold true at every point the door swings open.
The building just told me trimming the entry door is allowed, so that solves the main issue! Other transitions should be fine - bathroom floor is currently quite a bit higher than the living area and there's already a threshold. Kitchen floor is just slightly higher and I can probably make it work with a saddle.
