Discussion about
I rent an apartment in a 2 family house. My landlord has written on the lease renewal, as security deposit, the original amount I gave my previous Landlord in 2003 without any interest. Do I have a right to receive interest on my security deposit for a rental in a 2 family house? Do all the rules apply, like, landlord must save it in a separate interest-bearing account? I don't know whether I sould sign the renewal or not; please help. Thank you!

I believe if the building has fewer than six units and the owner deposits the security in a bank, the interest belongs to the tenant, less one percent for administration. So he probably owes you ah let's see. Now a bank pays about 1.5 % minus 1% for interest on a 2000 deposit. Um I think the landlord may owe you about 10 bucks in interest.

actually my bad if the landlord deposits money in a separate checking account and earns 006% interest you actually owe the landlord .004% of your security deposit. Maybe best you don't press the landlord for the interest for he can deduct admin fees from the security deposit.

is this assumed or written up somewhere. i had a conservation with the taxman about this and just out of interest. is this in your lease? my interest is broader than just the $10.
