Discussion about
We're buying the studio next to our one bedroom. Some people are recommending a full renovation right away. Others say, just break through, move in and start living in the space. Any thoughts one way or the other?

It will be hard to reno after you move in. Plus the breakthrough is going to be messy anyway.

I moved in and when I started to unpack. a fire hazard was uncovered in the wiring. I needed a complete re-wiring job, an upgrade to a circuit breaker, all new lighting fixtures, plus a ton of new outlets in all the rooms to handle modern electronics. That meant extensive plastering, skim coating, and painting around us. We had to repack everything but some of our clothing . We also had to clear space every evening to set up an air mattress.

If I had known that there was a fire hazard in the wiring, I would have put my furniture in storage and stayed with relatives for a month. It took much longer to finish the work with all our boxes and us taking up space. We went crazy trying to deal with the mess of the plaster dust, etc. The walls were not sheet rock so we had a LOT of mess when they channeled the walls for new wiring.

Do the renovation before moving it. Even a plaster skim coat and painting is messy, and if you've already moved in, the contractor will hate you because all your stuff will be in the way, no matter how clever you are about moving it around.
