We are required to replace all the windows in our landmarked co-op apartment. Most owners that have replaced windows in the building have used Skyline, but those windows don't come close to the pre-war character of the original windows. Any idea where I can get replacement windows that can approximate a pre-war wooden window or would that be laughably expensive?
You have to speak to your managing agent. I want to replace my windows and don't like the ones other neighbors have installed. I just found out that the Board only permits replacement with the windows I don't like.
Thanks jelj13. I was told that the Board would consider a different window, but that I would have to apply (without guarantees). What a shame. The replacement aluminum windows are just ugly.
A landmarked co-op will have an agreement with the Landmarks Preservation Commission, specifying the appearance of new windows, one or two vendors, etc.
Non-landmarked usually have the same kind of specs in their alteration agreement.
The idea is that eventually all the windows will have a uniform look, unlike the patchy appearance you see in a lot of old co-ops.
Most will give you a lot more leeway for windows not visible from the street.
our coop in Brooklyn heights is also interested in replacing the old metal windows with timber double glazed double hung windows.
we called 3 vendors and were only able to get "vague" quotes as we only have 11 windows to replace :(
if you do find a vendor you like who does landmark style windows please post back to the forum.
Try Kolbe.
By the way you can still go thru Skyline--they'd be the installers and would help you with the order. They may have other manufacturers to recommend if you need something very specific.
Thank you bramstar. I will try them and post back to the forum if successful.
