Discussion about 89 Pioneer Street in Red Hook
the townhouse is about 1700 sq ft, but basically you can only use 1200 as teh basement has such a low ceiling that it can only be converted in a technical room.
You can build out, in teh garden side, but bear in mind there that the lot across is for sale. Once will be developed the light and sun will be gone.
the crime stat at that corner of Red Hook are still at the highest.
they basically asking for $1000 sq ft for a gut renovation.
The property has been on teh market for 5 months, but owner is convinced it won't last.
Three years ago today, all of Red Hook was hammered by super storm Sandy. For this kind of money I think Key West is a better buy. I love Red Hook and would live there in a heart beat if it weren't for the flooding......you either dig Red Hook or you don't get it, it seems there's no middle ground.
Fema recommends owners raise property 3 feet up in Red Hook, otherwise yr flood ins is near $9,500 a year vs $500 if raised.
Is there any public transportation there ?
What are the crime statistics ?
Public transportation is two bus lines. There has been talk of a trolley for years, but after Sandy I doubt that will happen.
Red Hook has one of the biggest, perhaps the biggest, public housing complex in all of New York City. But it's a ways from this house. I've worked as a volunteer in RH and talked with lifelong residents who basically tell me there never worry about crime. There was a flurry of smash and grabs in cars about a year ago, that seems to have stopped.
We used to park our car in Red Hook for days at a time because you didn't have to move your car very often there. But with all the new housing, restaurants, etc. , parking has become a lot harder than it used to be.
Baked is the best bakery I've ever been to, Fairway is down the street, and the restaurant with the famous stuffed horse head decoration, Grindhaus, is worth every effort to get there. Not to mention Pioneer Works of course.
ikea used to run a free shuttle from Red Hook to Manhattan - but during the week discovered it was being used as transportation from the public housing - that was the end of that.
Very isolated place
If only Ikea could have rented horses to bring people from Red Hood into Manhattan instead of the shuttle.
