Discussion about
I am starting a gut renovation project for my apartment and have received proposals from architects for both basic plans (including coop board and DOB approval) and detailed/ elevation plans. Will I need both? What are the elevation drawings best used for? Will I need them to receive accurate bids from contractors?

We highly suggest investing in detailed drawings for bids and especially for construction; it will save you headache of misunderstanding and change orders. The better the plans, the less guesses and assumptions the contractor will have to make.

We will be happy to provide you with more information or bid on you project when it's time.

It will help your contractors for refining their bids, and, as an owner, I found the elevations very useful for getting a rough idea of how the moldings, door details, built-ins, tile layouts, cabinetry, appliance, etc. would all work together on a wall or in a room. In my renovation, the architect identified in the elevation drawings a potential conflict between the bathroom faucet I had chosen and the swing of the medicine cabinet. I know somebody who used the elevations to layout how they were going to hang their substantial art collection. Well worth having.
