Discussion about
Big John's, Yorkville Moving and Storage... any opinions on these or other recommendations? Not a large move and no antiques, etc.
Stay away from Yokville Moving! They gave me a big runaround about moving a very big, expensive sofa, something they specialize I and lied through their teeth. A few weeks later, one of their drivers went into reverse and crashed into a 10 foot long marble planter in apartment house. I used http://mooremovingexpress.com/ instead. They were very professional.
I moved from a 2 bedroom to a 1 bedroom more recently and used http://www.movingmaninc.com/. There were outstanding and gave me the best deal of all the other movers that are popular in Manhattan. Absolutely nothing was lost or damaged.
OK here is the definitive story. All the major companies Johns, Moshe's, Shleppers etc draw from a giant pool of people to be there movers. Some are seasoned, some are new. Many care, many don't. It is very hit or miss here and you can have a great experience with one and a horrible experience with the same one a day later. If you want grownups who treat you with respect to move your stuff you need to find a company who has staff movers who are overseen and trained. There are several of these companies in New York. One is JP Urban Moving and another is ALl Star. Expect to pay more for these. We have used them both. Shleppers quoted us like $1800 (we could not stand them) and All Star was around $3000. We moved three years later and due to scheduling could not get All Star. I did the same search for a boutique mover and found JM. They charged us $3300. We moved a very large two bedroom. The cost of the stress alone was worth it for me. If you are only interested in saving money then it does not make a difference which mover you pick. You might as well be playing dice.
I mean to say we also moved with All Star and they were exactly what i hoped for. (I also wrote "there" above when I meant "their")
I found the smaller companies to be better also.
I have used Rabbit Movers as have several friends in NYC. Found them to be really reliable and they often have a Groupon or similar deal to be had.
Most of the employees are idiots , not all , but most
Go to citymoves.com , list the details of your move, and get bids. They have current reviews of the moving companies so you'll know a bit about others' experiences. I used it, chose MF Movers, who came in $150 below the top bid, and was extremely pleased with the careful, on time and very professional movers. They even sent three men although I had only contracted for two -- for the same price.
