Discussion about
I just received a sign on my door for an impromptu inspection due to a complaint. I have been having my floors refinished at my single family residence. Does anyone have any experience with this? Did one of my neighbors complain? The note is very vague so it doesn't give me a clue as to why they were called in.

no experience with this in the city. My guess from having lived in the suburbs is that one of your contractors took a parking spot that your neighbors typically use, and/or it's a noise complaint.

Just received more info! Someone has complained to the city each week since we bought the house last month that we are illegally converting the house into a multi-family.

We haven't done any construction and only really moved in yesterday. I suspect this is a crazy neighbor but am concerned now that we have an inspector coming to look over the house. Whatever they find we get a ticket for whether it was there when we bought the house or not? Is there a way to respond to these complaints?

Talk to your expediter if you have one.

I don't have an expediter because I am not doing any work. There is no construction. There is no multi-family. This is just a neighbors way of saying hello.

What I am worried about is getting tickets for anything else in my house that is not up to code when they come in to inspect. How do i handle this? I what is my recourse for a series of unfounded complaints?

Perhaps NWT, a very knowledgeable poster, has an answer for the second part. Your buyer's lawyer may be able to help you with the first question and refer you to appropriate professional. Most likely, the inspector will not check the whole house but you never know.

Are you able to verify that this is a 'real' inspection by an agency of the city, and not a cleverly produced fake notice put there by a 1) thief, 2) "inspector"/"contractor" scam artist, or 3) weird stalker neighbor? Contact your closing lawyer.
