Foreign co-lease signer

Hello, Is it possible to be included as a co-signer in a condominium rent agreement? The main lease taker is a non-US citizen on a 2 year student visa. I'm a EU citizen working in Europe and planning to relocate to NYC later this year. Do I need to wait until I'm officially in the US to be added to the lease or can I legally request to be added as cosigner already now? Thanks, ribeiro
