Accompanied my daughter to an open house for apartment 4B. Almost refused to go up once I saw the condition of the apartment door and lobby. Broken window on front door, buzzer did not work, front door did not lock, dust bunnies in the hallway, mailbox half broken. Apartment was reasonably priced but not at the cost of her safety. Besides, they tried to call this place a 2 bedroom when it was really a 1 bedroom with a temporary wall installed in the living room dividing that room into two spaces --- with one half not having any windows or ventilation! Ridiculous. Oh, and the trash outside was messy. Looked derelict.

What do you expect at that price? Assume you are taking about the apt listed at $2600 or so.

In the current market it's kind of surprising that a building owner wouldn't take better care. But it's probably an indication that if anything went wrong in the apartment it would take a long time before it was fixed.

That temp wall may not even be legal. If the place seemed a dump, and your spider sense was tingling, tell your daughter to find something else. Not worth the hassle to live in a badly-run, derelict rental building even if the price seems decent (which, frankly, it does not - especially given that questionable 'wall').

As a tenant in the building I would say that it is very poorly maintained. The door has been an issue for many years without resolution. Heat is sporadic in winter because the boiler is 2nd rate. Wish it was better but that's the reality. Doesn't help that 2 apartments are suspected of being not only Air BnB's with rotating cast of characters but with 1 of these being a bit less savory and housing some fine Russian ladies engaged in, err.. the 'oldest profession' The landlord and his sons and daughters are of Sicilian stock if you get my drift; shocking that they are practicing members of the bar in NY and New Jersey (daughter) and should be reported as a party to illegal activity.

Do you still remember your opening comment? Thought you didn't even want to go into the building and still decided to rent it?
