Discussion about
I want to renovate my bathroom and relocate the door putting in a wider one. The size of the existing door is 23.5", not including the frame. I could move the door to a place that is 36.5" wide or another place that is 40" wide. However, I am confused by the building code on the door size since I saw some diagrams from the city that showed doors that were 2' 10" or 34". That means I cannot change the door or relocate it. Can anyone tell me the required door size? (PS The building was built in 1952 and has the original bathroom.)

Just be aware that if, in renovating your bathroom you are moving fixtures, you may be required to have a 30"-32" door to comply with ADA requirements.

I am not moving anything but the door into the long hallway that leads up to the current bathroom door. There are 2 closets in the hallway used for linens and laundry storage. They would be easier to use if the closets were accessible while you were in the bathroom. I would like to remove the door and pull back the side walls so they line up with the hallway. The regulations I found on the DOB said the bathroom door had to be 34". I only planned to put in a door between 30 to 32", the size of my bedroom doors. 34" seems extremely wide and won't fit.

It is a silly regulation. You can always show 34 inch on the drawing and put a smaller door as long as your architect is willing to self certify.

The super comes up to check the work is being done according to the plans. He is very polite about any "suggestions (acutally criticisms)" he makes and tries to work with the residents. However, he has a good eye for measurements ....

Supers do get involved to some degree but I have never had one check any measurements, they want to make sure you are not doing anything against building rules like installing a garbage disposal or washer/dryer when they are not permitted

I had the same issue and the actual door is smaller than shown on the dimensions submitted to dob. No one will measure it and super does not matter. Managing agent is not going to complain to dob if super escalates to him. Remember they are your employees.
