Thank you in advance to anyone who can help with my questions I just started my kitchen and bathroom renovation on Monday in a pre war apartment that we purchased in May. My contractor and his crew have been amazing and actually ahead of schedule. I could not be one bit happier with them. I am beyond happy with my plumber too. Now for the Problems I had no shut off valves for water so the buildings plumber put them in after my contractor demoed kitchen and bath. My plumber filed the papers for 3/4 pipes and the building put in half. they would not let my plumber do it and reimburse. My plumber said that could cause a water pressure problem. Next after they went to remove my stove they found out I have no gas shut off valve. The super is saying its my responsibility to install it. Well its was my understanding that coop is responsible for all shut off valves. I don't want to rile up super and coop board just yet. So my plumber told me we have to file one of two permits. The more extensive if it does not pass pressure test. Side note I looked up all DOB filing for my building no one has ever filed for a gas line permit. Only one gas permit filled in 1998 for an entire line where they had to replace line in 6 apts because of gas leak. My plumber said that since I have my own metered gas line that if super is present, two plumbers and a contractor to sign off on pressure test, they shut my gas line down and do that and while gas is shut down they can install the shut off valve. My super is giving me a hard time. If the pressure test does not pass they file the extensive work permit and if it does pass its an easier permit. Considering that when they renovated in the apt in the 90's they illegally hooked up that stove with live gas I would think he would want them to do it while gas is shut off. Once again no permit ever filed like the one they want to file. I want to do this the legal right way but I don't think I should have to pay for it. Has anyone gone though this type of problem in the past?? Also, we did not get an inspection on apt or we would have found that. we are idiots. The owner was well aware of the fact and so was the super because she changed out all appliances to stainless steel to sell the apt and kept the 1990 white beat up stove and then when I was in tears in the lobby the other day my doorman said wait I thought she ended up fixing that meaning the prior owner. One reason why a lot of times people don't file for gas work is that very few buildings can pass pressure tests and you open up a huge can of worms with potentially getting all gas for the entire building getting shut off and a major construction project needed.
In your case, let's say it leads to the discovery that almost no one has the proper shut off by their stoves and the entire building has to be re-piped, with no one being able to use their stoves for 6 months?
The coop is responsible for everything "inside the walls". Typically the plumbing shut-off valves are inside the walls but the gas shut off valve is outside the wall.
@30yrs_RE_20_in_REO. Thank you so much for your quick response

So according to this if you read first page last paragraph buidkignis responsible for providing each apt with individual shit off valve. It’s exaclty what my plumber says about testing the line.
Exactly what you said I’m scared of. I refuse to do this the wrong way is entire building going to hate me if I get gas shit off. Since no one has ever filed one of these do you think super is strong arming me looking for a payoff. I’m at a loose

A couple of things:
Do you know if your gas pipe is shared with the rest of the building?
Will they provide you will a shutdown? Most buildings will not and want the plumber to do it on the fly, most plumbers will not do it anymore
As another poster stated, if they do a pressure test and it fails that can cost you a lot of money, I am not talking just a few thousand either, what floor are you on?
Jodi, How about asking the managing agent for a solution? Coop plumber may be able to do it if you send the managing agent the link. You can reimburse the coop. This will save coop trouble.
I have my own meter and gas line to me and we are on second floor. My plumber said they have to check from basement to one above me. Thank you so much for all your help!

Also my plumber wants no part of it but he will do it. But he said if it does not pass pressure you are talking over 10 thousand worth of work

I think this is an instance where unrealistic regulations actually end up in more dangerous conditions. Since almost no one can pass a pressure test, people don't file when they do gas work. As a result you end up with things like in your building we're no stoves have shut offs (clearly a dangerous condition) because everyone is afraid to file any gas jobs.
RE20,
Actually, when a person has their own gas line they typically pass and if not being on the 2nd floor should not be that costly
If you have your own it doesn’t make sense to check the one above you.
Thanks so much for everyone’s help.
