Of all the units in all the buildings I look at, 721 seems to have the largest number of units consistently decorated in what I would call "aspiring middle european swag and bling". The Donald, for all his foibles, certainly didn't kit them out this way, but he seems to have sold to a lot of people with a consistent idea of what constituted a swanky New York apartment. Is it just that this was a particular look when the building was sold, and these are all first resales, or is this an ongoing style that is considered stylish?

It's a shame, as I actually sort of like the floor plan.

When the original units were sold, the interior finishes were very poor (Netflix documentary on Trump - his project manager says it). Almost every one redid the apartment to their liking. The finishes in this apartment are rather expensive - I do like the marble floor - but overall not the current taste.

The interior finishes were poor because the units were meant to be redone. At the time Trump said something along the lines of "I love a black marble bathroom, but I can't sell a whole building full of black marble bathrooms." So to some extent he was the first to come up with the concept of the "plain white box" which many years later Brokers were so fond of espousing.

Thanks 30. Btw, what are the typical residential ceiling heights in this building?

Not to hijack from 30, but I want to say 8'6"? It's a postwar and the high-ceilings trend had not yet come into vogue. There's more of me nattering on about Trump Tower in Vanity Fair here:

Thank you Ali. That is low for the prices they want and have sold for in the past before new condos with similar views and higher ceilings became available.

Btw, I think 8’6” is not so bad with floor to ceiling windows and view.

I really hate it when I compose the long post, hit reply, and streeteasy just eats it without posting.

Just curious, what kind of stipend are you guys getting from SE to sit around and post all day?

@luxurybroker, many years ago, when SE was just getting started, this forum was much more visible, and they tried to encourage participation by buying us frequent posters drinks every few months or so. As a result, many of us got to meet "in real life" (that is, those of us who didn't know each other already -- I used to work at the same firm as 30_years).

Now that SE is owned by Zillow, they don't buy drinks anymore (and have pretty much tucked this forum into a corner, where it's hard to find). However, some of us "regulars" do come back just to say hi to each other. That's not meant, in any way, to exclude newer posters -- I can't speak for others, but I love talking about real estate and hearing different people's perspectives about it. Just because we found the clubhouse first doesn't mean that it's not your clubhouse too.

I am also happy to buy you a drink/coffee IRL -- just drop me a line at upstairsrealty [at] gmail [dot] com and we'll figure it out. Please put "StreetEasy" in the subject line so I can find it.

Does anyone remember the competition between Trump Tower and Museum Tower when they both came online in 1984-85? Museum Tower was considered the more sedate, quiet, "old money" option with its side street location and affiliation with MOMA. Trump Tower was the brassy choice for celebs and the nouveau riche with its Fifth Avenue frontage. Trump Tower won that competition and I think still sells for higher prices psf.

But wow, according to SE, almost 10% of the apts. at Trump Tower are currently for sale, 21 out of 231 while at Museum Tower it's half that at 4% - 11 out of 247.

I also recall the floor to ceiling windows at Trump Tower. When inspecting a unit at Museum Tower, I was told that their lack of floor-to-ceiling windows (there are actually a few) was because they did no want owners to feel altitude sickness. Probably a cost issue in reality.
