I have spoken with several irritated friends who were easing their way into a home purchase or a relocation to NYC, but decided not to bother because of this. No joke. Unless buyers read the fine print and are careful to select the less highlighted tab on the right, the contact box directs those who select it to a real estate agent who takes it upon themselves to set up an appointment with the seller agent, and claims this buyer as 'theirs'. Finding this process without transparency or simplicity, one friend opted to buy in a different city; another has chosen to continue a string of rentals ad infinitum. Having on a central NY RE site what is essentially an ad for agencies be presented as a neutral "contact" abuses how viewers are taught to recognize the standard formats of communicative tools. I didn't understand until recently why my friends were so disgusted. [less]
Tell them to look at the New York Times or go to www.urbandigs.com not moving to a particular City because of a search engine issue is just a tad extreme...
Ahhhhh David...not buying what you are selling sir. Relocating to different city because of a search engine?...... Please stop spreading falsehoods. The industry you are a part of is bad enough ethically. Please don't add to their wonderful reputation.
This "Premier Agent" system is indeed a joke and I think the brokerage community knows it. More than a joke. Hiding the fact that hitting the "Send Massage" tab does not send messages to the listing broker but to a SE buyer agent is a scam.
ximon...it's just one other way that the participants in this industry try to blank each other. This is why most of the "successful" agents out there have no moral compass. SE is just doing what everyone else does. Keith Burkhardt is one of the last of the Mohicans. Trying to keep an industry infiltrated with undesirables honorable. Personally I don't know how most of these backstabbers live with themselves.......there I said it.
I told a friend to go to SE, and he trusts me. Yes, there exist people who won't leave home if there are any signs of a shark attack. I know quite a few of them.
Someone on here thinks I work in the RE field? I think I might have known about/posted this quite a while ago in that case. I only caught on after a friend who is selling explained it to me.
Ximon - "scam" is the word that came to my mind.
Ya know David...why don't you get those friends to come on over to this forum and post about their experiences. What do you say? I'm sure they are extremely frustrated as you are and want to express their disappointment also. Being that you are not in any way associated with the real estate business this should provide a nice perspective on the customers the real estate industry so selfishly serves.
And how would they find this forum? I don't know what anyone else sees when they go to streeteasy, but from my account there is no link to this forum whatsoever. It almost appears that streeteasy wishes it would go away. The only way I get here is by knowing that it exists, doing a Google search for it, and saving the link.
@30, lol, me too
From the Menu:
Resources / Tools / StreetEasy Forums
@30 I was embarrassed to ask about that ,I thought it was just me not being able to find it!
Hey Streeteasy how come you're hiding the forum?
I think StreetEasy realized that the only people who participate are a handful of discount brokers (and their various usernames). Probably not really useful for the general public to be subject to a constant slew of self promotion intermixed with slander?
Why don't you guys go out there and try to do some deals :-)
LuxuryBroker,
You are probably joking, but I am one of the most active posters on this forum and that is so far from an accurate description of me and my postings that I don't even know what to say.
I am not laughing or winking.
Why would someone sink further time into an already sabotaged commitment? I would not advise a friend to 'tell their story' from the directive of someone who has dismissed me and others with different experiences, tolerances, ethics and styles.
A number of non-agents participate in these forums, or even rely on them during purchase or sales. I am one, and other discussions hold comments by others who have somehow found their way here. I would imagine there are also those who search and read rather than comment.
Describing a real estate agent/agency as "the last of the Mohicans" is quite disturbing - and revealing.
SE is the main hub of real estate traffic for NYC. It should operate transparently, and up to a basic ethical standard.
David2016 you opened the thread by saying someone passed on buying in NY because of streeteasy's "contact agent" someone decided not to buy in new york. That suggests everything that follows will be silly. I agree that there are too few posters and a bit of a "cult of message board" on this but accusing people of multiple identities is a bit much.
I'm going to beat myself up now over half-assedly rewriting my last post and responding to the wrong person. But.. I have to say I also as a buyer find the information on this board interesting, if not often "meant for someone else", but I also know message boards fall apart when they start being introspective and even worse if there are too few opinions.
Hi David,
If you're actually trying to reach someone at StreetEasy itself, there's a "Help" button at the bottom right that will generate a ticket that they will read. We posters on this thread don't work for StreetEasy -- we're just the people in their coffeeshop.
That said, many of us -- including theburkhardtgroup, luxurybroker, 30years, Urbandigs, and myself -- are brokers. But I don't think any of us are in the Premier Agent program -- am I correct about that? We're happy to clear up the confusion that your friends are experiencing, and blow away some of the smoke, but this is one fire we didn't start.

Any buyer with two brain cells to rub together knows you never make contact though a third-party site. Same issue with Zillow, etc. Use these sites to find places you like but contact agents directly via their own websites. Not rocket science.
Pier45: I'm a bit confused here. I didn't accuse anyone of multiple identities. What precisely are you talking about?
Sorry to disappoint but yes it's true - a friend who considered relocating to NYC, was considering it if the pieces fell into place easily, opted out because he couldn't make the move on the diy terms he prefers and feels safe with. Perhaps he doesn't have 2 of Squid's particular brain cells. He is, after all, a different person.
At this time in NYC and its influx of White supremacy, I don't think defending misleading screening tools or comparing sellers of apartments (land/property) to 'Mohicans' is the best idea, but the coffee shop seems to have reached a consensus.
I wasn't filing a complaint with SE. I was making my opinion known.
I don't have time to continue this discussion but if anyone wants to think about this more, I recommend reading up on concepts like 'structural violence.'
You're right, there are too few posters these days, and most of them are multiple identities of the same person.
It's not rocket science. Just do a site search for comments from the same person and you'll see that ximon is doug perlson and that SteveFR is burkhardt.
Or just scroll up a little and see SteveFR's comment about burkhardt being the last of the mohicans LOL.
But my question is this. If some of these guys aren't being paid by SE. Then why do they spend all day writing free content for SE?
So what are your other handles on here?

I thought it was just a world conspiracy against me, my experiences and sentiments exactly.
From day 1 I've felt the purchase of Streeteasy was to slowly kill it as it posed a great harm to the big box brokerage houses.
Anyway Ive had to use the Rube Goldberg approach to getting to these forums for well over a year now.
Luxurybroker....omg u r so way of!!!......paid by SE?? lol.... I am not Keith Burkhardt.... What the heck is wrong with u sir? I am investor who is selling one of his properties and trying to gauge the market from these boards. I have been on these boards since 2005(prior- SteveF). Some here will recognize that name. I was complimenting Keith because he is an honorable broker who has high morals and standards in an industry that is flooded with shady characters.
Yeah sorry Lux - gotta chime in here - Steve and Keith are most definitely not the same dude.
For people trying to find this forum, just point your cursor at the Resources on the top header and it will show a link to "Streeteasy Forums".
I view Luxury Broker comments as I would of a rebellious teenager who has potential to be reformed.
300,
Some of us don't have "resources". I am assuming "agent Resource Center" takes its place, and I do not see any link to the Forum there.
PS LB sounds a lot like Columbia County to me.
