Discussion about
As part of my renovation that is nearing completion, I wonder how to build out my bedroom closets. One is an small existing walk-in about 5'W x 5'D and the other is new at 40"W x 20"D. Both have 8.5' high ceilings which I wish to take full advantage of by doing shelves above whatever I build below. The small walk-in will be for a woman and the smaller new one will be for a man. I have hall closets for winter coats, umbrellas etc. What are people seeing in closet design? Custom closets are very expensive with the cheapest I found at around $4,000 (Home Depot) to build out both closets, with no drawers or any shelves up high. Anything fancier and I feel certain I am looking at close to $10 grand. Are drawers important for a walk-in? How about shoe racks? Other features? I could ask my carpenter to build out both closets with wood shelves, etc. which would be a nice finished look and then paint everything. I personally like this look which I think is more suitable for a pre-war apt. but want to try and customize the closets for the typical owner, but without breaking the bank. Any advice would be much appreciated. [less]
I loved the result we got from California Closets. They're semi-custom, but really have the look and feel of custom (at least that's how ours turned out). The designer will help you spec out the space and I have to say they're quite good at putting every cubic inch to great use. We've had ours for a good 6+ years and they've held up very well, still looking and working like brand new.
Thanks quid. Can you tell me anything about the cost? I assume they are one of the priciest closet designers and installers around.
They weren't cheap but I recall not as steep as we were afraid they'd be. I don't recall off the top of my head unfortunately but will see if I can find some records.
Ximon, Get the carpenter to get finished plywood shelves and add some drawers from ikea if you need to.
We got our bedroom closets (2 regular, 1 walk in 5x7) and foyer closet done by California Closets. They are quite expensive especially with deeper drawers involved, I think about 12k.
Then later we got the rest of closets done by Advanced Closets, advancedclosets@gmail.com. They are a husband and wife team and at least one of them used to work for California Closets. Cost is much less, and result quite nice. Highly recommend.
I ordered custom closets from EasyClosets and had my contractor install them. Very happy with results.
300, that's an option I was thinking of. Maybe buy a dresser or cabinets (maybe unfinished wood) and get carpenter to build around them to integrate.
Thanks FD. I will reach out to Advanced closet and see if they can help me.
Does anyone think going with unfinished wood and then painting would be a mistake? I see so much laminate today from Home Depot, Container Store and other closet specialists.
If I go with laminate, is white the best color choice?
Laminate is good in closets because it stands up to the constant wear and tear, but really a gloss or semi-gloss paint would do well also. For laminate I personally like white for standard stuff but love a mahogany-colored finish for a men's closet (especially if the doors are already mahogany).
Elfa from Container Store is another option. Bring in your closet dimensions and they'll work with you on a design. I think it's a great value, especially when the parts go on sale 2-3 times a year.
They'll also run installation specials every so often, but if you're handy it's really quite easy to install. It's also easy to tweak as you use the closet and figure out you'd rather have more drawers, an extra hanging rod, etc. -- just stop by the store and grab the pieces.
They offer a variety of finishes but I'm partial to just the standard "platinum" option.
Ximon, Check Home Depot closet systems.
Yes, 300. Got a quote from HD which was around $4,000. for both closets. Thought that was way high but pretty much everyone else was as as high or higher. I think I can save myself a few grand by working with my carpenter and buying a few pieces a you suggested. Maybe get a small corner piece for the walk-in and build around it. Smaller closet is very simple but will still cost me almost a grand if I went with shelves or drawers. But I will look at HD again. Not sure they still offer design and installation services as I can't see that on their website but I will give them a call again to check.
I am a bit over budget on my reno. Just a decent range hood and a stackable washer/dryer will cost me $3,000-4,000 more than I expected. I guess it will be the same with the closets. I guess I'll be 10-15% over budget when all is said and done. Could have been worse.
Which closet system from Home Depot? They are several which can be cut to size well under $1000 per closet.
I go ta quote from their closet design people at Home Depot Interiors. I don't remember the options. They do all the work.
300, who cuts to size? HD as part of design/installation service?
Your carpenter or super or whoever installs.
There are other modular systems on the web. There are some who will cut to size for you before shipping but you need to install.
300, Home Depot offers a full service closet design and installation service. That’s where I got my quote. But I might have to design myself and get my carpenter to install. Probably get a better result and save a few thousand $ but will need to spend more time than I thought.
+1 on Elfa from container store. Much cheaper than other options, especially when there's a sale going on. I did my own installation and spent about $1200 on a large closet. Did my own installation to save a bit more - though I will say I'd likely have them install next time as it was a fair amount of work. They currently have a sale on with free installation.
Thanks Sinklair. $1,200 is indeed a good price. Did you get shelves and/or drawers for that price?
