Does anyone have a recommendation for a painter who can strip, repair doorframe, and repaint apartment metal entry door? It is a pre 1978 building however no children in my apt or entire floor.
Anyone can strip the door as there are various paint strippers available at Home Depot. However, painters do not usually repair the door frame. Ask your super for the door frame repair and get some one else to paint unless your super can paint as well.
Thanks Mercer. I should have mentioned that it will be painted a high gloss with fine paints of Europe. Previous painter didn’t prepare the door at all and simply applied the paint. The door was left with an orange peel texture....not really sure I understand why that happened but that is why I was looking for someone a bit more specialized to ensure a good outcome.
Sounds like the previous painter applied the paint with a roller, which typically leaves that sort of texture. If you want a truly smooth glossy surface, you want to take the door off, have it professionally stripped and primed, then have the paint sprayed on. A really skilled painter could do brushwork and get very close to a smooth surface. All depends on how much money you want to throw at it.
Janovic can recommend you someone. Go for some one who does skim coating. Guessing you are buying the paint from them. You need fine plaster like compound applied and sanded a couple of times before paint is applied in three very thin layers with a brush which need a while to dry as it is an oil based paint. Hollandlac line also have recommended painters on their website.
If it is simply a flat slab door, you may find it cheaper to Simply buy a new one. There are a number of places in the Bronx that fabricate apartment doors at reasonable prices. If it is a pre-war building with a somewhat intricately paneled door you could still check the price but it will depend on how hard the detailing is to replicate.
