Discussion about
My wife and I live in a rent-stabilized apartment in Brooklyn and have actively begun house-hunting a couple of months ago. After making an offer on a place and, due to an indecisive and uncooperative seller, rescinding it, we are back to square one. Our lease expires on March 31, 2019 and we do not want to renew for another year, as we would only need to stay for an extra 1-2 months (the housing market is ripe where we're looking). If anyone is familiar with this type of situation, how likely are NYC landlords to allow tenants to stay month-to-month after the lease expires? Of course, I plan on speaking with the landlord when we receive the lease renewal and explaining the situation, but I'm curious to know what to expect.

Honestly it depends on your landlord and your current rantal discount. Manager in my old building was thrilled to break my lease.

Just renew it for the year. You never know what will happen. Nothing is certain until you close on the new house/apt. Since you are on a rent-stabilized lease and assuming unit is in decent condition, the landlord is happy to break your lease, or you can always find someone to take over your lease. But not having a place to stay because you can't find the right apartment or close in 1-2 months is WORSE.
