Discussion about
Hi Everyone, i recently purchased my first apt in an NYC coop. its a large alcove studio that i want to turn into a legit 1 bedroom. The issue is that the HVAC is ijn the way and the current setup would require some unique thing that nobody is sure of to build over the HVAC to be part of the wall - not sure this will look too good. My contractor made it seem like a huge deal and not something to mess with. Wondering if anyone has ever done this and if its really that big a deal. Its not one of those units that sticks outside the building btw. Any thoughts?

If the HVAC is part of the building's central heading/cooling (pipes delivering hot/cold water to a radiator unit with a fan that blows air across it), then building a wall 'over' it, so that part of it is in one room and part is in another, may be a problem, as the entire front panel of most units usually has to be accessible so it can be removed for servicing (changing filters, etc.).

If the building is willing, you might be able to replace it with two separate units (one in each room), but this will involve quite a bit of plumbing and electrical work, and the building may not permit it. If you are putting up a wall to divide the space, how else will you heat/cool the 'other' room?

Two separate units as suggested by Aaron so that each room has its own unit. Guessing the building supplies hot water and cold water for HVAC. It is not cheap as it needs plumbing and shutting down building system during install for a few hours.
