Q: How would you feel if you walked into an apartment you were considering and it had a low profile over the range microwave hood that only fit things 7" tall? https://www.kitchenaid.com/major-appliances/hoods-and-vents/microwave-hood-combination/p.1000-watt-low-profile-microwave-hood-combination.kmls311hss.html There's new low-profile microwave hoods from Kitchenaid/Whirlpool that look appealing.... Interesting unit! I'm personally hooked on the combination microwave/convection oven units, which I find more useful (I use the convection part more than the microwave), but the Kitchenaid unit is good looking and probably fine for the majority of microwaving that people call 'cooking'. I'm generally not reheating things in large containers, so the height limitation wouldn't be a problem. Overall, I'm in favor of it.

I'll add that I have a Kitchenaid regular-size over-the-range microwave/hood unit, and the fans are noisy. I'd be curious if they're any better on this unit.

Very few people need some thing in the microwave which is more than 4-5 inches tall. It is mostly used for dinner plates (2-3 inches with food) and reheating in a serving bowl.

@Aaron2 -- my friend who works at Whirlpool that alerted me to this unit said to expect them to be similar loudness, but more powerful. Our current hood we use maybe once a month, so it's loudness/effectiveness is a not a huge concern personally.

@300_mercer -- yep, except everyone (wife included) *thinks* they often need to microwave something more than 7" tall :)

Pushing 500CFM through 2 smallish mesh grates must sound like a jet engine?

There are 4 fan speeds, but yes, on high it is a bit deafening.
