Discussion about
I've seen at least 4 listings in different neighborhoods for apts where there is a half bath off the master bedroom. Is there a reason why they don't just put in a shower and make it a full? Never seen this idea prior to these apartments... Here's an example -- http://realestate.nytimes.com/sales/detail/44-1226334/TEHAMA-NY-11218

I think most often the 1/2 baths gets glommed onto bedrooms as a result of reconfiguration of apartment leaving what was a 1/2 bath from what was once a different area now connected to bedroom. I would think no shower is added because plumbing constraints make it impossible or the building rules prevent it. Many pre-war buildings have 1/2 baths in kitchen (disgusting as it is today to think about someone pooping next to the stove) that during remodels are made part of bedrooms. I think it is weird and a major minus. Who wants to pee in the bedroom and then walk across the livingroom to shower? It's just odd.

The layout in the above referenced place just sucks.

@kylewest - ok that makes sense. it is not appealling to me, but i have seen apartments with them that i've really liked but the half bath in that area is not a selling point to me.

The description of the apartment says that it has two bathrooms, not one and a half. In this particular example, my guess is that the tub or shower stall was just omitted from the floor plan by accident. I've seen that happen a lot, in addition to my personal favorite which is the omitted door to a bedroom or closet which suggests that one must "beam" inside a la Star Trek.

kylewest: the .5 bath off the kitchen is for your live-out maid.

Brooklyn is not where I work, but I'd guess that was originally a full bath that was reconfigured to put in the W/D.

I'm aware of what the 1/2 bath in kitchen was for. My point was that for the way people live today, it is kind of gross.

Since I have too much time on my hands I emailed the broker who responded that indeed the floor plan is missing the shower. Two full baths. Mystery solved.

Damn. I was going to suggest converting to a big wet bar for shorter trips to the kitchen when the late night munchies hit.

I recently saw an apartment where the full bath was off the living room and the half bath was off the master bedroom.

@julia that might have been the one I saw -- was the full bathroom all the way to the left and the bedroom & half all the way to the right?
