Discussion about
Hi, just wanted to ask you guys’ opinion about East Harlem. Particularly by 119th-120th st and 1st ave. The wife and I looked at an apartment there, and it looked safe enough. It didn’t look like a run-down neighborhood and there seemed to be a decent mix of high and low earners. Despite that, I figure I’d ask more people, especially those that know the area. The wife and I might as well be out of towners. She lived in SI, and frequented queens, manhattan and Brooklyn while I lived in queens and frequented Manhattan and LI. Thanks for your insights!
It is not a great area even with all the development. 1st avenue (and 2nd) are major truck routes on the east side so you will contend with higher levels of traffic/noise and pollution throughout the day. The neighborhood is not run down and has improved tremendously over the past 20 years, but you still have higher crime levels compared to south of 97th street on the east side, and south of 125th street on the west side of Manhattan. My suggestion go there a few different times during the day (am and pm rush hours) and at night to get the feel of the place. Also you are not the closest to the subway on 116th and lex, but not so far.
Yes as stated above it's essential to visit it at night.
