Discussion about
Thought will start a thread about the biggest apartment configuration issues. My number 1 is 1. Powder/bath room in the kitchen despite apartment being renovated in the last 30 years.
Here is an example. At least there is washer dryer which is very useful.

I think in general people have a lot of trouble incorporating the "maids room behind the kitchen" into modern renovations.
Agreed, awkward layout but seems common in nyc prewars. At least it has another bathroom which is accessible to guests
Mina, You do not mind toilet smell in your kitchen after they used it? I would rather have the guest use one of bathrooms inside a bathroom rather than stink up my kitchen.

I mean bathroom inside a bedroom.
300, you need to get some guests with better manners! Lol
"300, you need to get some guests with better manners! Lol"
That made me laugh.
As to guests and bathrooms, I would close the door to the kitchen bathroom so it isn't in play, and direct to the one off the bedroom hallway.
A configuration that I don't love is front door foyer is really the kitchen. Always small apartments, but surprisingly common. I saw two today.
I am ok with this as long as kitchen is large enough to leave a few feet of room between front door and kitchen.

RE10023,
It's kind of amazing to me that "Pullman kitchen" used to be the kiss of death and now $2 million (and more) new construction condos have them.
30yrs,
Yes! I'll never forget the first Pullman I ever saw in The Century, back in the days when the Mayflower Hotel was still next door and the Coliseum was still standing. The Pullman was still behind doors, like a Kitchen in a Closet. Ha! Since then, they have taken the doors off those kitchens.
The two (in another building) I saw yesterday literally had the configuration where you walk in the front door and the range and counter space were on the right and the sink and refrigerator were on the left, and that was it. The path to the living area was right down the middle.
300, agreed. I've seen plenty where you feel like there is some sort of walkway from door to living area. It's just the door in the middle that I wasn't loving.
This is certainly undesirable.

Bramstar, poopurri is funny.
On Pullman, I had a kitchen in a small walk-in 4x5 closet with half fridge below I think a two burner stove. I still managed to cook enough meals but after that a nice big kitchen became a priority once I could afford to move. And now after many many years since the closet cum kitchen, kitchen is the hub of activity in my apartment - our child is already appreciating how the food is prepared, and the layout is fortunately very conducive to it.
300,
When we first moved to Manhattan we subletted (it was a rent controlled/stabilized building, so illegal sublet, though we had no idea....though in hindsight I should have realized that something was off when person renting to me said, I feel like I've known you my whole life, like you're my niece. In fact, tell everyone you're my niece! Yes, I was that naive. But I digress.) .... the kitchen was THE hallway to the bedroom and to the only bathroom. But it was an amazing apartment, like a little house on the roof of the building, with grape arbors and apple trees. Incredible, unobstructed views. Magical.
And love that your child loves and appreciates food prep!
We had a very cool Pullman kitchen built into a closet between two rooms on the second floor of our brownstone in Chelsea. It was all stainless steel, actually pretty cool with a little half fridge below and a two burner stove. I think it was made by a company called Acme?
And of course I remember all those old tenements on Ludlow Street, the stove was literally right next to the old clawfoot tub!

Certainly convenient for taking a hot bath back in the day!
I loathe the current incarnation of pullman kitchens.
At least entering into the kitchen directly from the front door solves one of my pet peeves: Having no short and discreet route from the front door to the kitchen. I saw a plan recently (in the Apthorp?) where the route to the kitchen was through the living room and dining room. Does everybody in the apartment need to know you're home with the groceries? Likewise, layouts where you have to walk through the dining room or kitchen to get to a bedroom (a variant on the 'what to do with the maids room?' renovation problem).
I also think big egg tubs in front of windows are unfortunate, if not outright dealbreakers.
Ha. That is why many prewars have a service entrance close to the kitchen. Great for taking out garbage from the back.
