Discussion about
A coop board has barred an ER doc who came to NYC to save lives by running ventilators from staying in his brother's apartment. With the new Democrats in Albany, maybe they should simply force all coops to be converted by law into condos, with the same rules that people can't be discriminated against on the basis of race, religion, family status, or life-saving occupation. ............................................................................................................................................................................ https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/03/nyregion/co-op-board-coronavirus-nyc.html

Well, I think most people already thought that, but this is even more outrageous and stupid than normal. If the names of the board members involved with this decision leak, then the fun will really start.

Well yes but the hospital should be putting him up in a hotel.

I wonder if the brother, who owns the apartment, would be willing to let the ER doctor brother stay in the apartment while the apartment owner brother’s family were to still there?

I think that is condition coop board should ask for. Take must have visitors if you are yourself there.

I would be concerned if some one in my building, who ran away to Hamptons to avoid contagion from living in a multi-family, allowed any high-risk guest to use the apartment while they are away.

You may be concerned, but you are not evil, so you would thank him (from a distance) for being there to save your life

George, I understand both the humanitarian and coops board’s side. These are difficult times from a health point of view. Every one is paranoid and and I understand as we in NYC still have very difficult two weeks ahead of us.

Everyone needs to be pragmatic these days. It's not like "well I don't want to seem rude for not wanting to ride in the elevator" even if you perceive risk. I'm getting this in my building even though I'm wearing a mask. I'm letting them take the car and waiting for the next one even if they get miffed (while not wearing a mask!). Hospitals should be putting out of town doctors in largely empty hotels to avoid spread.

And this is why people hate New Yorkers. Anyone who wouldn't share their building with a medical professional in need of a place to stay has lost their sense of humanity and common purpose. "Let them stay in a hotel and eat cake" -- rationalization for your own self-centeredness! They are here to save your a$$ and you can't be even slightly inconvenienced. Shameful.

To make matters worse, the comments from physicians on the NYT article made it sound like this wasn't just any doctor, but some kind of legendary superhero doctor -- the guy you would want caring for you if it came to that.

I think it's necessary to admit that for about a century one of the purposes of Cooperatives has been to allow for quasi-legal discrimination. That's not a value judgement as to whether it's moral, just an observation.

On the legal discrimination, I was surprised to learn about myself that I quite favor it when it comes to having a kid whose parents want to buy them an apartment living next to me. It is a value thing that really shouldn’t bother me, but it turns out that something about a kid who has never worked living at a high level on their parents’ dime bugs me. Not sure what that says about me and definitely not sure I like whatever it is that it says about me, but I am in favor of coops that don’t approve those purchases.

Let's not stereotype all New Yorkers and boards.... But this group truly suck!!!

Certainly and obviously could have been handled much better by the board and the people living there. I'm sure the good doctor would have been happy to work with them to put together a protocol to keep everybody safe, for what would have been the little time he was occupying the apartment anyway.

George you are so funny, coming from someone that skipped town like a banshee at the first sign of danger, then casting aspersions on me for thinking about the safety of others when much safer (for everyone) alternate living options are obviously available for this doctor. Indeed.

Nothing wrong in going out of town if you have kids.
