Hi all, In light of the virus and what it's done to the economy, my husband and I are no longer feeling secure in our jobs. We have a lease with our building until March 2021 , but the reality is, we may need to break it. The lease language is pretty standard: you're responsible if they can't find another renter, etc etc. Has anyone seen or heard anything surrounding the relief efforts for renters beyond the 90 day eviction pause protecting renters for lease breaking?
I honestly doubt a landlord will let any tenant break a lease right now
Relative to other major cities, particularly in Europe, NYC's non-rent-stabilized leases are extremely landlord-friendly. Once you sign a lease, you are obligated to make the landlord whole until the end of the lease term, unless you can prove the property is uninhabitable, for which the courts set a high bar.
I remember after 9/11, I had a tenant in my apartment in BPC. The City ruled that non rent stabilized leases could not be broken.
I just emailed Streeteasy about allowing individuals to post rental or sale listings for free during this crisis. They said No! They could give your full price listing an extreme week- that’s $185 for a 2 week rental listing! In this crisis! Please spread the word and shame them. They are part of Zilliow which has a $7 Billion (with a B) market cap today!
Shame on you for not offering any help to NYers in need!
I’m being blocked by Streeteasy for criticizing them for not helping out individuals who want to post a lease break/rental or for sale by owner on their site... the fees are high and all they are offering is 1 extra week for free if you pay $185 (for 2 week rental listing) or $599 for a 4 week sale listing...
Quite chintzy since Zillow (the parent company) currently has a Market Capitalization of $7 billion!
When this crisis is over, people are going to remember who helped out individuals and who profited from the crisis
