I emailed Street Easy (part of the Zillow family which has a $7 Billion market Cap!) to ask if they would offer any assistance or free listings to individuals (not real estate companies) who need to list their apartment for rent or for sale during this horrible and economically bleak time in NYC and they said no. I would have to pay full price ($599 for sale listing for 1 month or $185 for a rental listing for 2 weeks) but they would give an additional week free ..... no one can even enter my building due to Covid restrictions but I wanted to list it (for free) hoping that I could get some interest once the lockdown is over. I think this is terrible of Streeteasy/Zillow! Please repost and add your name to make them know if you agree that this isn’t the way to show solidarity and help to NYers in need! [less]
Why wouldn’t they collect from people like you, who can clearly afford it, and donate to people much in need of help as in Hospitals or just have to lay off fewer employees?
I hardly want to defend Zillow, but will point out that despite a market cap of $6.17Bn a/o 31 Dec 19, Zillow does not actually make money on a consolidated basis ($2.7Bn revenue in 2019, net loss of (305)Milllion). Net loss of ($1.48)/share. Total shareholders equity is only $3.4Bn. They need every penny you can spare.
Apropos of the current market, as of 31 Dec they were carrying approx $837mill of inventory. We know they have suspended new purchases, and it will be interesting to see how they revalue it for their 31 March 20 financials.
Hi UnhappyNYer - We hope that you and your family are staying safe during these times. We fully understand this ever-changing situation is impacting everyone differently and our goal is to be as thoughtful as possible to support you in this rapidly changing environment. We’re continuing to evaluate options across our products - not just monetary, but also adapted tools, technology, and resources - to help all customers and our community during these trying times.
In relation to discounts for someone who is looking to advertise a home for rent as For Rent by Owner on StreetEasy, we are extending the purchased listing by 1 week at no additional cost. For someone posting a listing via For Sale by Owner, we will extend the purchased listing by 2 weeks at no additional cost. The extension will match the product purchased i.e. if you purchase the product which includes the Featured status, the 2-week extension will be also be Featured.
Making sure we are quickly providing tools, resources and information to help agents, renters, buyers and sellers navigate whatever part of their home search they’re in - while complying with safe social distancing and public health protocols – is also a priority. We’re continuing to create and publish resources here: https://streeteasy.com/blog/series/nyc-real-estate-covid-19/ (For agents, resources can be found here: https://streeteasy.com/agent-resources/)
Sorry but why should StreetEasy be expected to offer services for free? Do you also expect Amazon to send send you goods for free? For the supermarket to deliver free food to you?
I'd rather see big companies like Streeteasy/Zillow donating services and funds to vulnerable New Yorkers who are actually IN NEED--not home-owners who feel like testing the market for future sales/rentals.
