Discussion about
Hi all I am in the planning stages of essentially a gut reno I am thinking about unexpected costs that might arise, and so was wondering if anyone has experience with typical asbestos removal costs? I am worried the apartment might have asbestos in the glue of the wood flooring across the entire unit. And I really want new flooring installed - how much more expensive to remove it or do i just install over? Any other areas where asbestos might pop up and be very expensive to deal with? Thanks so much

No point in guessing. Just get some asbestos tests and know for sure.

Installing new flooring over old is never a good idea. Wood floor should never be glued down. And any trapped moisture will wreak havoc.

Areas of concern in a standard apartment should be: wall finishes, vinyl tiles, pipe insulation, mastic/adhesives/sealants. You can look in NYSDOL ICR 56 for a compete list of “building materials” that are suspect or resumed asbestos containing.

Ask your managing agent or the super in your building, they will know whether or not there's asbestos in the mastic that's holding the tiles to the floor.
