Discussion about
We are allowed to replace existing windows in our apartment on the rear of the building and are thinking of replacing three windows that are currently 41"X82" with new ones that are 72"x82". This will require some of the bricks to be removed etc. Does anyone have a sense for how much such a renovation would cost? We are on the 9th floor and the building has 12 floors. another apartment in our building did similar changes and we were told that the workers came down from the top using a hanging work platform. The owner of that building is out of the country and we have not been able to talk to him or his contractor.

The variation in cost is huge due to drop-down scaffolding and the type of windows you choose. In addition, the quotes will vary greatly due to this being a small job. Best to figure out a way to get in touch with who your neighbor used. The managing agent will know via Certificate of Insurance / otherwise.

Legal scaffolding with permits can run you $10-15k plus. But if you are doing it without permits, it may be $6-7k for scaffolding.

In addition, you have demo, protection, garbage/old window removal $5-10k
+ New windows cost which can be $2k to $6k per window depending on whether it is aluminum or nice wood.
+ Install including new lintels, refinishing interior (you will likely need to paint the full wall), and profit $3-6k per window
+ Permits and approval (3k)
+ Depending on the building structural engineer, inspections etc $5-7.5k
+ Carrying the window up to your floor???

Please let us know what you end up spending.
