Discussion about
I currently live in CA and I am planning on moving to NYC in September. I have started my search and have tried contacting the listing brokers on StreetEasy for the apartments that I am interested in, however I am not hearing back. I got in contact with one person, and they asked when I was available to see the apartment and when I asked for a virtual tour but they said they would get back to me the next time they are in the building. I decided to move on and contact other agents through the StreetEasy listing, but I am hearing back and for some of them, there isn't a direct contact. I am very new to the NYC market and I am wondering what are some other ways to move my move forward. I don't have the financial capability to hire a broker to help me.
Are you renting or buying? If renting, that may partially explain it since brokers make a smaller commission renting units than selling so maybe they just don’t want to bother for such a small payday. Also, since you are in another state, they may not take you seriously until you can actually visit in person. I did not have this issue when I was in Florida looking for a 2nd home/investment property in NYC, because the broker I used sold a condo I owned many years ago, so maybe he knew I was a “serious” buyer. Do you have friends who live in NYC? Maybe get a referral from them. Also just be persistent and call instead of email. Maybe give them your firm arrival time in NYC so they know you are really coming and need to find a place! Good luck
don't worry, it just means their business is too good. it is common. if they got no business, they will treat you like royal
You can hire a broker, just tell them you're only looking at no fee apartments.
Some landlords require a view in person before doing paperwork. For some brokers it may not be worth the headache.
You are coming to the NYC rental market in the busiest period I’ve ever known in close to 20 years. Everyone and their mothers who left during COVID all need to be back, upgraded, etc. by Sept. so that’s probably the top reason.
If you dig deep enough into the StreetEasy listing, the primary broker’s name / company is available. Maybe there’s even a link to the primary broker’s website. There, you can find the broker’s phone number, email address, etc. I think you’ll have an easier time making contact that way rather than through the StreetEasy form.

This website will connect you directly with owners, no brokers. At least that's the way it used to be...
32 years ago I did what you are are attempting. I suggest you have your things put in storage, get an AirBNB here and then start your serious looking at apartments. It's very difficult to move here cold on a limited budget.
Agree even in more modern time and in a pandemic, you are probably best to come out to NYC to get this done.
Looking for apartment in ~2005 even with stuff being online and my college was only 3 hours away, I still had to come down and crash at my friends place for consecutive weekends so I could find a place with a broker, apply and sign a lease.
Chr, it's just that brokers look at an out of town call or email as a pig in a poke. They're not going to devote attention to something that may not pan out for them. Being here indicates that you are more serious in your search.
