We moved into this building 8 months ago and have already received a lease renewal packet with a 17% increase for next year. At first we were upset because we've enjoyed the neighborhood, but after weeks of intense construction forcing us to leave during the day (including Saturdays), the parade of mice we have to walk through to take our dog outside, the roaches that we can't seem to get rid of, the brown water from the kitchen sink (makes some really colorful ice cubes), and the fact that we've never met anyone from the office or leasing office...we are realizing it's probably for the best that they are adding $550/month to our rent so that we'll find a better building.

Rental market has gone up a lot in the last 6 months. So if you got a great deal 8 months back, you can’t really look at just in terms of percentage increase. You need to see what the comparable apartments in building are renting at.
