Discussion about
Seems like the YIMBY lobby has gained some traction. Am I misreading the state of play in NYS and NYC? Will we see a real upzoning in previously sacrosanct neighborhoods? What do all the smart people here think? I have no idea who is funding Open NY but they seem less rag-tag and more well-oiled, as compared to past iterations.

YIMBY is another one of these manufactured "grass roots" movements (like TransAlt) which claim to represent large groups but are actually vocal minority funded by special interests.

You've also got the whole "Urbanist" movement who got their degrees playing Sim City and thinks if something works in a video game that's the real world. Like TransAlt which thinks all cars are evil and must be stamped out, Urbanists think anything exurban is evil and wants to stamp out all single family housing. They are both dogmatic religious cults.

I hear you! I’m so curious about who is funding them, but the current head of the group struck me as slippery when asked. But their type of narrow focus can be very effective, especially when you get young people all pumped-up with a special truth. And when I look at the current state of politics, it is clear that the progressive wing of the D party is on the move in NYS, and I think there will be some significant change. I’m just not plugged in enough to figure out where and when.

Notice the possible connection between YIMBY and TransAlt (I think TransAlt denies this but it's been fairly widely reported they get funding from Lyft - the parent of Citibike).

BTW I think if Citibike is treated like a Utility company they should get regulated like a Utility company.

A review of OpenPlans 2021 990 tax return notes that they fell below the 33% test for public support, and had more than double the 'public' contributions (~$3.1m) than the prior year. Their explanation for not meeting the 33% rule, but meeting the 10% rule is... opaque. Exactly where their money comes from is unclear from the filings (That should be the point of Schedule B, but reporting requirements are so weak as to make it useless).

This is the case for TransAlt as well, but there may be concentrated funding in both orgs - Part II, Section A, line 5 is occasionally a red flag).
