From NYT: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/30/climate/gas-stove-pollution-danger.html

One has burner produces air pollution 3x the safe levels. Amazing how many NYC apartments have gas stoves with zero ventilation.

Leaky windows = very good for air quality.

The code says make the building envelop really efficient so that every one can complain about air quality. Then put ERV/HRV for air exchange to make sure people can breathe good quality air. While the code does not requie ERV/HRV. That is what people will do for fresh air exchange.

300_mercer, can you re-write that for us to state what you mean more simply? Thanks!

Induction cooktops can mitigate this problem. Can these old building electrical handle induction?

Rinette,

There is a huge disconnect when the same people want better insulated houses for energy efficiency and better indoor air quality. For better indoor air quality you need fresh air from outside. To get fresh air from outside, you can either open the window or have a less well insulated house. Is the indoor air quality poor due to gas stoves or due to houses being better insulated and people not opening the windows?

I am waiting for the same people to ask for ban on first class air travel and private planes.

You can Google ERV/HRV.

@hotproperty: Often no. My 1960s era building would require new electric to be pulled from the meter box on my floor. I thought about it, because I really like my other induction top. My neighbor did it, and it added a few thousand to his renovation expense (he didn't install induction though). Older buildings may require new wiring all the way from the cellar. A look at the back of many Park Avenue buildings will reveal lots of exterior conduit carrying new power runs up to individual apartments.
