Discussion about
According to a wall street journal article today, 70% of the city's apartments are rent-stabilized. The liberal city government is continuing to subsidize these programs, and as a result, the supply of quality housing is artificially low. Working professionals are unable to live in decent apartments, even when they're making low six-figures. This is a travesty and a direct result of liberals who are obsessed with providing luxury apartments to poor people.
I'm tired of rufus
but to answer kgg's question
rufus is in nyc because he is a native nycer and his mom is still here
my profile of rufus:
late 20s
born/grew up in Brooklyn
Jewish
mom and/or he was harassed by some black youths in the 1980s, early 1990s, maybe even had a car broken into
one of mom or dad were potentially teachers in NYC's school system with troublesome "hoodlums"
mom / parents were renters until a co-op conversion - 50s/60s/70s type building with 8 ft. ceilings
attended one of the City's better public high schools but was still picked on because he's short, curly hair, and a bad athlete
attended Cornell University's Agriculture and Life Sciences School (the State Land Grand School with discounted tuition but is also stretching as an Ivy by all accounts). Potentially the Human Ecology school.
angry about affirmative action because he worked hard to get into Cornell and had no special breaks (parents had no money for SAT tutoring and had no alumni connections) but black students got to Cornell to study farming in his school more easily and with financial aid.
as a result of growing up renting and in a low quality co-op, and during NYC's darker years, never personally bought into buying real estate in NYC so is pissed off about the current prices and the money the non-NYers made
NYNYer, I'd say you're right about him still living with his mommy, and about the communistic lower-tuition (80/20?) Cornell Aggy thing . . . but that's about it.
As I think I said, Staten Island.
alanhart, you should read the paper more often. violent crime in NYC has skyrocketed this year. three of my friends got mugged this year: 2 in chelsea and 1 in UWS. they were all mugged by thugs who live in the projects in those areas. meanwhile, none of my friends in Chicago have been victims of crime because there are no projects anywhere near where they live and hang out. the fact that you don't get this simple concept is both confounding and sad.
rufus please provide support for the contention that violent crime in Manhattan has skyrocketed in 2008 because I know the 2007 numbers were very good and I believe NY as a whole had less crime then Chicago.
No denial ... I was right
I've never been mugged. Maybe you should have tougher/bigger friends.
Never been mugged, don't know others who have been mugged.
Maybe by "mugged" rufus means thugs who live in the projects in those areas made silly faces at them.
you guys are so delusional that it's funny. maybe you guys should walk around avenue D, projects in chelsea, or the projects on west end avenue. if you don't think those places are dangerous, there's no point in even debating this issue.
In all seriousness, I lived between B and C for 2 years. Not only have I never been mugged, I never felt nervous. But I used to live in West Philadelphia, so perhaps I am skewed.
Who hangs out on avenue D?
Be especially careful around the WEA projects.
There are rival gangs around there, and they fight all the time in a way that looks sort of like dancing. I don't want to sound racist, but one gang is all Puerto Rican, and the other is all white. They treat the local beat cop like he's a joke, and they're the same way with the judge. And they sing. I once saw a documentary about it, and they were singing on that. A boy got killed.
Be especially careful around the WEA projects.
Oh, they're nothing. Just don't EVER run into the Van Buren Boys at night, they're scary. If you do, just remember..."8". You'll thank me later.
i recently visited a friend who lives in the element, which is next to the west end avenue projects. nice building, but that area is a disaster. for a second, i thought i was in a third-world country.
hey, who are you rufus? why do you hate NYC? And if you do, why don't you just leave.
I don't get Debbie Downer type people.
Rufus, for recent context to others, this is one of your finer fear mongering, racist discussion topics.
gleeclub, how is this racist? there are projects in that area, and it's not a pleasant place to live.
rufus, why don't you like mulattos like Obama? Do you only like white people? How about Irish-Americans . . . can you tolerate them?

recall this statement by rufus mentioning Saks Fifth Avenue, a recurring theme picked up by AcesCracked:

ignore this person
report abuse LP1, why do these people have to live in luxury buildings in manhattan? No one is saying they should be homeless, but there's plenty of decent places in bronx and queens that can cater to these people. It's just another insane liberal program that tries to redistribute wealth. It's about as insane as the government handing out gift certificates to saks fifth avenue to poor people, so they can buy clothes.
