Ugly apartment buildings

Discussion about
http://www.cityrealty.com/condos/peers.cr?bid=6146 This is just a sample of some of the apartments on UES, in the 60's. But most buildings in the city have the similar look: bland, boxy, square. They're an eyesore, and look like absolute pieces of sh*t. It would be nice to see NYC play catch-up when it comes to architecture.

Kind of like all of LSD, plus all of Sheridan. Miles of Bob (Newhart) Hartley's building.

alanhart, if you have actually been to LSD south of say 4000 North, you would know how mistaken you are. The luxury condos in Chicago are innovative, and they all look different.

Actually I agree with Rufus on this one. UES is ugly as sin, only one subway line and a bunch of old people.

you're right sticky. UES east of lexington is downright atrocious. every apartment building looks the same; the architecture belongs more to a third-world city. i highly urge more new yorkers to visit chicago and check out areas like lakeshore east, gold coast, river north, streeterville, and they will be amazed at the quality of the residential buildings.

Crime is a major problem in Streeterville. Perhaps Rufus likes it there because he is a criminal and that way he can walk to his "job".

The following values are represented as an index, where the value 100 represents the national average.

Total Crime Risk 188
Personal Crime Risk 319
Murder Risk 485
Rape Risk 285
Robbery Risk 305
Assault Risk 224

Crime is out of control in Streeterville and that is indisputable.

even if those numbers are true, i'm willing to bet they're still lower than neighborhoods like UWS, midtown, chelsea, east village, les, brooklyn heights, dumbo, williamsburg, fort greene.

These things are called facts. You should try to open yourself up to them from time to time. You will find that people will respect what you have to say more and it will stop you from making ridiculous statements like "Chicago is better than NYC in everything" and "Chicago has the best architecture in the world because it has new hi-rises" and "Chicago is great because tourists go there adn NYC sucks because tourists go there" and Chicago has less crime than NYC" when it doesn't and "Chicago has more conventions than anywhere else" when it doesn't and of course the beauty of "NYC's crime is on the rise and homeless are wandering the streets" which is the whopper of all whoppers and doesn't have any basis in reality.

rufie, I couldn't find the stats for Boystown, but

Gold Coast:

Total Crime Risk 211
Personal Crime Risk 317
Murder Risk 360
Rape Risk 326
Robbery Risk 413
Assault Risk 196
Property Crime Risk 144
Burglary Risk 95
Larceny Risk 86
Automotive Theft Risk 217

so the criminals there are so hard-core that they don't bother as much with the petty larcenies and hum-drum burglary, instead preferring the violent personal crimes. Sounds great!!!

Murder Risk 143
Rape Risk 42
Robbery Risk 177
Assault Risk 108
Property Crime Risk 46
Burglary Risk 39
Larceny Risk 53
Automotive Theft Risk 37

There you go again Rufus, letting those pesky facts get in the way of your talking points. The next thing you are going to tell us that we are going to be greeted as liberators in Iraq and the Iraqi's will welcome us with flowers and chocolates.

Where are those darned WMD's? Maybe they're in Chicago since it is such a great place!

job and most of my college friends ended up here. i actually liked it the first year because it was "new" and "different." but it got old quickly, and the hassles of living here are not worth the cost. i just think chicago is a much better bargain and yet still offers all the amenities of a world-class city. i never bought the hype that NYC has the best of everything or that its people are so much more sophisticated than others.

Okay, so let's see, rufie. You got your AA from Southern Illinois University (all: I don't mean the AA he's in now. It also means "Associate Degree", and there's nothing wrong with that). Then you moved to "in UWS", to the West 60s. And what job had you had during your time in UWS?

See what I mean about New Yorkers? Hearts of gold!

kspeak is concerned about rufie's employment situation (By the way rufie, for what job did you move to NY? Cat got your imagination?).

And I have rufie's best interests at Hart when it comes to housing. Rufie, if you choose to move to River North, I hope you can find a job that you can do from home (such as being an online rebate processor), because just look:

River North:

Total Crime Risk 226
Personal Crime Risk 348
Murder Risk 450
Rape Risk 233
Robbery Risk 537 (yes, that's five hundred and thirty-seven! Indexed to 100!!!)
Assault Risk 199
Property Crime Risk 144
Burglary Risk 88
Larceny Risk 77
Automotive Theft Risk 233

I looked at those buildings and they aren't really anything speacial. They are big buildings with amenities, yes, but that's about it as far as character. One isn't even built yet, a couple have a heavy mix of owners and renters (never good) and a couple are heavily used for corporate housing.

For a guy who keeps yapping about architecture, these are not shining examples of architectural greatness. They look like a whole bunch of buildings that went up in Jersey City over the last couple of years, except they are in Chicago.

That's what this whole thing boils down to. He doesn't like NYC. See, part of the joy for me in living in NYC is the diversity, the mix of classes/people, different neighborhoods, old and new styles and the cultural opportunities. Is NYC a little dirtier than Chicago? Sure, but it has 3 times as many people and is a much older city. All cities have problems, even Chicago (crime-ridden for sure). Part of why we pay the premium to live in NYC is that we WANT to live here and we like it. I think Rufus is unhappy in NYC so he is lashing out at everything about it, instead of just saying I am not happy here. There is nothing wrong with that.

BTW, if cleanliness and new buildings are so important to Rufus, he should look into Scottsdale. Loads of new construction, tons of young people and it is so freaking hot there the garbage incinerates in seconds leaving the city nice and clean.

Scottsdale has a big sign that announces itself as "The West's Most Western City" . . . or, as a Cali friend of mine used to read it, "The West's Most Midwestern City".

Anyway, I think Scottsdale women are probably too intellectual and liberal for rufie.
