Discussion about
I am currently about to sign a new lease in BK paying more than my target price in rent for a place with no utilites included. I have always had water and heat provided by the landlord. Anyone else pay all utilities? I have no frame of reference and dont know what to expect for heat/water. Tried calling ConEd but they were really vague about it and couldn't give me anything concrete. If anyone has any numbers to share it would be appreciated Thanks, JM

If you are paying for the heat and h/w it is pretty safe to assume that you are using either electric or gas. Your costs will obviously vary depending on which one it is, size of the place, type of heating technology (forced air, steam, electric baseboard etc). Someone here might be able to give you an educated guess with some of the parameters but otherwise

This might help...
"Before signing a lease requiring payment of individual heating and cooling bills, prospective tenants are entitled to receive from the landlord, a complete set or summary of the past two years' bills. These copies must be provided free upon written request. (Energy Law §17-103) "

Watch out for water. They basically bill you once a year, and it can be far more than expected, especially if there's a rogue leak. Ask to see the most recent bill so that you can get an estimate of what it'll cost.

If you're paying water, sounds like you're in a house? How many rooms? How many exposures? Assuming heat is gas and not electric?
