For those of you who doubted my assertion that crime and destruction are on the rise in NYC, check out this post on curbed. This happened near one hanson, which is considered one of the most "desirable" condos in brooklyn. http://curbed.com/archives/2008/10/21/car_toastathon_crazy_80s_close_in_on_one_hanson.php#reader_comments

What does this have to do with crime? Cars go up in flames all the time due to mechanical problems, like spark plugs.

All of the car parts that are missing were burned in the fire: tires, fabric, leather... those all burn.

so someone torches a car in Brooklyn, and all of a sudden we're experiencing a massive crime wave? Rufus don't you know that we could find one of a handful of murders that took place in Chicago in the last 24-48 hours as proof of the same in your favorite place? But why bother it wont change anything.

My friend's bimmer burst into flames when he was stopped at an intersection. He got out right away, but the car was totaled. I'm sure if he had expensive rims, and they weren't damaged in the inferno, he would have salvaged them.

so

Cracker Boy, you're a moron. The starting of this thread was the only thing that was the result of vandalism, plain and simple, not "artwork" or "accident." You need to wake up and stop smelling the glue.

Rufus - Have YOU ever been to brooklyn? Have YOU ever been to NYC?

As one of the people at Curbed responded:

"I live by this area. This car is in an area where there are a number of auto repair shops, it very well may be that this car was towed there to be worked on at one of these shops, and that it has nothing to do with the "old new york coming back". I have seen crashed and burned cars which are waiting to be wroked on parked along this area for a long time. Its nothing new, and most likely is not what at all what curbed is trying to represent that is is."

You so naive....

Since when, rufus? Since the homeless freely roam in every corner of Chicago and pretty much the first folks you see when you get out of your hotel? Since your public transportation hasn't been updated since the '70s so it has a vintage charm that includes dimly lit stations and rickety trains?

I stand corrected. You're just a little worse than the squatters' area in Mumbai and a little more dangerous than Mogadishu.

yeah, the south side of chicago sucks; lot of housing projects and murders. no one is denying that.

but the more relevant comparison is looking at places like gold coast, lincoln park, river north, etc., and comparing it to NYC neighborhoods like upper east, upper west, chelsea, village, tribeca, etc. And by that count, Chicago wins by a mile. It's cleaner, has better nightlife options, and more attractive and interesting people.

Ok, so, NYC is not for everyone - we get it. You have different taste. But why can't you just let it go? Honestly, no one in NYC really cares that much about Chicago one way or another. If you love it, terrific! But comparing it to NYC just makes Chicago seem even lamer and gives Chicago-lovers a bad name... You are doing a grave disservice, young man.

I just realized the big rufus problem... he doesn't own a dictionary...

up·scale /adj. ˈʌpˈskeɪl; v. ʌpˈskeɪl; n. ˈʌpˌskeɪl/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[adj. uhp-skeyl; v. uhp-skeyl; n. uhp-skeyl] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation adjective, verb, -scaled, -scal·ing, noun Informal.
–adjective 1. located at, moving toward, or of or for the upper end of a social or economic scale: The boutique caters to upscale young career people.
2. luxurious, costly, or elegant.
–verb (used with object) 3. to improve the quality, value, or rating of: a five-year plan to upscale the neighborhood.
–noun 4. (used with a plural verb) elegant, elite, privileged persons collectively (usually prec. by the): shops that only the upscale can afford to patronize.

Lets see... NYC is more expensive. Anyone who can afford NYC can buy in Chicago with pocket change. Socially and economically, NYC dwarfs Chicago.

Hell, even the dictionary thinks Chicago sucks...

nyc1002, no one doubts that chicago is cleaner than nyc. in chicago you don't see giant piles of garbage bags lying around on street corners. in nyc, it's a reality of life.

in an earlier post, i mentioned specific Chicago nightclubs that are better than NYC's, and no one could offer a response.

Chicago has more attractive women because all the hot girls from the Big 10 schools and a decent number from SEC schools, move there. NYC gets the ugly ivy league chicks, along with other northeastern schools. By and large, those girls just aren't as attractive as the midwestern and southern women.

Once again, you are an idiot who knows nothing about anything outside of NYC.

Yes, fat girls from PenN State and University of Illinois are SO much hotter than supermodels, not to mention the regular all just plain damn hot models.

Oh yeah, and lets not forget that the hottest chicks from U Michigan and such make it here, Chicago gets the leftovers who weren't hot enough to get rich boyfriends...

And the best of the UC chicks. And florida chicks.

Yes, the chubby Purdue girls are SO much hotter.

nyc10022, these models you talk about are a TINY percentage of the female population in NYC. And you're absolutely wrong when you say that the hottest chicks from Big 10 schools or UC or florida move to NYC. These girls usually stay in their home regions and settle down a few years after college. They have no interest in moving to NYC. I think you've been watching way too many sex and the city episodes.

Cracker Boy,

How nice for you that "most normal straight men" are not really your "cup of tea", but I don't see why you're posting that on a public discussion board . . . did someone suggest that most of them are?

Also, in your second sentence, you left out the words "to be tied" before the part about "and don't smoke". Careful proofreading is important, but I think most people understood what you meant in this case.

I saw way way more smoking in Chicago than I ever did in NY, and perhaps things have changed, but I believe smoking is still permitted in Chicago sports bars and dance barns, so we can put two and two together and wonder why straw-headed fat two-pack-a-day smokers are your "cup of tea".

One more thing, Cracker Boy. When you talk about "hot" girls at the nightspots you frequent in Chicago . . . um . . . what's the discreet way to ask this? . . . you realize, don't you, that by day those are "not" girls?

gleeclub, Cracker Boy will claim that drinking in Chicago stops at 4am, same as New York. But that's six-sevenths of a lie. Also, Chicago is one of those awful and undignified places where "last call" actually means that all drinks must have been taken away by that time (actually 2am except on New York night) -- so they stop serving and start snatching your drinks from you hours earlier.

Also, they eat lunch at 11am in Chicago. Very uncivilized.

alanhart, smoking is now banned at all public venues in Chicago; it took effect this past New Year's. Patrons now have to go outside to smoke. once again, you misread my post. i said most normal straight men have the same tastes in girls as i do. if you ask a sample of say 100 men from all across the country, i'll be shocked if more than a few think that nyc has a lot of gorgeous women. the places that will come up are los angeles, san diego, austin, chicago, atlanta, miami, vegas.

gleeclub, last call is at 4 AM at most places and on some spots on saturdays, it's 5 AM.

Chicago has interesting and fun nightlife options in a wide variety of neighborhoods. NYC's decent venues are mainly limited to downtown. The chelsea scene sucks, midtown is mainly after-work spots, and UWS and UES are mostly sports bars and pubs.

"Chicago Is So Two Years Ago" - Fall Out Boy
*"Chicago Is Large" - Nazgul
*"Chicago Seemed Tired Last Night" - The Hold Steady
*"Chicago, Damn" - Bobbi Humphrey
*"Come On! Feel the Illinoise! - Sufjan Stevens
*"Going to Chicago Blues" - The Count Basie Orchestra
*"Goodbye to Guyville" - Urge Overkill
*"A Guided Tour of Chicago" - The Lawrence Arms [I like this one for its munitions band name]
*"I'm Dying Tomorrow" - Alkaline Trio
*"In The Ghetto"- Elvis Presley
*"Leaving Chicago" - Knockout
*"The Lincoln Park Pirates" - Steve Goodman [probably the Chicago gang that Cracker Boy wants to pledge]
*"The Night Chicago Died" - Paper Lace

rufus is either convincing us to all move to Chicago to further drive down the prices here so he can finally afford to stay here. Or he wants us to at least recognize Chicago as a good enough alternative to NYC so he can feel better about himself since he could not make it here.

What exactly is your agenda, rufus? You spent too much time in this site when you should be scouring for very cheap apartment in Chicago, so you can stop living and sponging from your folks.

semerun, that CompStat page really is incredible. We all know the story, but to see the numbers - all notable crime cut by more than 75% city-wide since 1990 - really drives the point home that NY is just a far more desirable city to live in now. Also down by a third vs. 2001. I view this as one of the major drivers - second only to incomes - for the insane increase in RE prices. There's a reason people were literally giving away their 4,000 sq ft coops in the 70's.
