Discussion about
Could someone give me a BALLPARK estimate of what it would cost to install new mid to high end wood plank flooring in a 1200 sf 2 bedroom apt? Doesn't have to be an exotic wood..just trying to get an idea...5 k? 10k? 20k? Thanks so much!

Approx. $60,000 between demolition, installation, finishing. I'm assuming you do not mean laminate. You can save some with pre-finished, but those floors have those micro-bevels along the edges that catch dirt and many people feel says suburbia or lower end.

Way too high. I did 3500 sqft (Manhattan) for half that. Don't do pre-finished. The best for expansion and contraction issues is still domestic oak, finished-in-place in the widest width you can afford. If you don't need a subfloor, then you can get it down for under 10k.

go to Siberian Floors in Tribeca 212-343-1510, they have a pre-finished floor (many different varieties), I bought the 6" wide plank floors and they are great. Don't listen to anyone until you see for yourself. For 1200 sq. ft you will need about 1300 sq.ft of flooring (for waste), also if you have a subfloor then you can put a solid floor, if not then you will need an engineered floor (they have booth, the engineered is cheaper). Also any installer that is going to install wider then 5" will need to nail and glue (glue means Bostik Best or Bostik BST, anything else is not on the same level) A decent installer will charge you roughly $5 a sq. ft to install plus materials (figure $1500 for materials), all in i think you can get it done for $25k. with demo.

Ok. Should have asked more questions before spitting out a number. Is this a new building or old one? What is the subfloor? What type of building? Are there obvious complications that will be encountered (prior flood made mess of a particular area and you have no idea what you'll find during demo)? We are talking Manhattan, right? Curious what Malraux would say--he does top end renovations and knows what things cost. I'd trust his advice if he posts here later. I still feel <$25K is utterly unrealistic.

I just installed solid oak 450 sq.ft m2 glued over a concrete floor with 3mm foam underlay. Not on a ground floor so no dpm needed.Total cost $3000 so i think for 1200 sq ft $9000 should cover it for solid oak/beech/maple pre-finished.Walnut or other exotic hard woods more expensive.I'm from Ireland by the way maybe flooring is dearer in the u.s???Dledven says $5 sq.ft to fit =$6000 then he says $1500 for materials this is only $7500 way off $25,000?
