Discussion about
I am purchasing a property and have a contractor already because I am doing a gut renovation of the kitchen and bath before I move in. I thought the floors were hardwood, but they are actually Pergo (wood lookalike-laminate) I have now learned. It actually still looks good, but I am wondering since I will already have the labor - is it worth it to change the flooring to actual hardwood? How would you feel as a potential future buyer?
i would change to hardwood.
It totally depends on your preferences. It's probably a good sign that you thought it was wood. Some people prefer engineered floors as they tend to wear better.
Also, Pergo normally includes a 25-year warranty.

In consideration of your neighbors you may want to keep the pergo too. Although hardwood generally looks better (sounds like you have a high quality pergo though) your down stairs neighbors will appreciate the Pergo as with hardwood floors noises (walking, dropping things) tends to project loudly into downstairs neighbors apartments.
yeah - i thought it was wood! And it does look good. Ok right now I am thinking I will keep it. I am doing a renovation of the kitchen and bath and that should be the real addition. I think I will save myself money since it looks good. I think they were refinished recently.
If I still feel this way before I might be interested in selling (which I dont expect should be in near future), then I will think of it later on the back end.
If it's in good enough condition that you thought it was hardwood, it should be all right to leave it for the time being
I think that I'd be talking to industry professionals. It seems to me that I heard that Pergo takes water even less well than real wood. Of course, it it ain't broke.....
original poster here: worked out real well. The reason my contractor and i thought it was would is because it is wood. It turns out the floors are engineered wood and so I am not ripping that out - saves me money! When you do floors you can choose hardwood with two options engineered wood or solid wood. And mine are the engineered wood - glad I wasn't crazy. My contract pulled out a piece from the closet and it is now confirmed!
