Discussion about
A NYC staple for many (MANY) years, most of you are likely aware of the East vs West feud regarding H&H bagels. If you dont know what I am talking about, then you likely dont live in the city or live under a rock. While there is also a midtown location, that typically doesnt fall into the E. vs. W fray as its more of a wholesale facility. In either case, cast your vote for the best H&H!

Hate to do it, but Julia, it was my suggestion. Ignore NYC10022 and do go over the bridge and have some of the best pizza the city has to offer. Please note that its by the pie only, cannot buy a slice. Walk over to the ice cream factory before hoping on the water taxi, you should have a great day!

nyc10022, you even pick fights about food? Friggin amazing. Anyway, for those unfamiliar, it's called Totonno's, not Tontonno's. Anyone supposedly so knowledgeable probably shouldn't have made that mistake 6 times in one post. I kid, I kid!

For bagels below 14th - my old neighborhood I actually loved bagel buffet the best - they are medium sized, perfect texture and so good right out of the oven and they were open 24 hours - not sure about that still., murray's are pretty good too.

Dude, I had that in Buffalo a few months back...it was AWESOME. Surprised it isn't talked about more.

Its basically a roast beef on a heavilty salted roll - with horseradish as an option - but it works magically. Awesome sandwich!

I recommend walking over the bridge, absolutely, but don't do it for the pizza. And travelling to Brooklyn and only staying in a 2 block radius? really?

Walk the promenade... go into Cobble Hill and see Smith Street, passing by downtown. Visit the canal... bla bla bla.

Brooklyn is a WHOLE lot more than 2 square blocks (which probably explains your pizza mistake).

For pizza, take the BDFQ (which all go elevated, exciting for Manhattanites) to the end of the lines... and Tontonnos is a couple blocks away. Then walk the boardwalk and ride the cyclone...and maybe catch a cyclones game. Oh yeah, and Nathan's to say you did.

Oh, and DiFara (best slice in city) is right under the elevated subway in Midwood.

nyc10022...you're going to be shocked but I've never walked the brooklyn bridge so I'm looking forward to it and strolling the neighborhood, promenade, etc. when my cousin comes to visit. thanks for the suggestions.

How about Kosar's down on Essex Street.

Julia, if you take a walk over the bridge to Grimaldi's be prepared to wait. There are a lot of tourists that go there. I waited nearly an hour and a half the last time I went. Can't believe I did that but once you're there.... That said, the pizza is great, ditto for the ice cream at the Ice Cream Factory next door.

It is a fantastic trip.... you probably want to walk DUMBO a bit, too.

Also, if you are feeling pizza, here is my suggestion... just walk into Brooklyn Heights/Cobble Hill. Lucali is on Henry Street, which is a gorgeous block to walk down (and check out the promenade).

Lucali is better pizza, and a much nicer (slightly more upscale) setting.

And then you get some of the Heights, too.

I wish.

You probably haven't been there in a while. AWFUL. They changed over, different owners, no longer kosher. And the bagels were stale two times in a row. Biyalis ok. We aren't talking a little falloff, the "oh, not quite the same". We're talking... WOW, are these made by Lenders?

And this is coming from someone who has gone hundreds of times.... my aunt lived in the building above since I was born.

Julia, it's nice to leave New York once in awhile. The county of Kings can be an enlightening cultural experience, and doesn't require a visa or a big travel budget. Just be careful. They have street gangs there, like the Lords of Flatbush for example.

Actually, the Lords got replaced by the Decepticons... ;-)

Julia, glad you dig. I figure you might as well consider the rest of the Brooklyn top attractions.

Promenade (waterfront of Brooklyn Heights)
DUMBO - Brooklyn Bridge Park (the classic view of Manhattan / Brooklyn Bridge from all the TV shows)
Downtown Brooklyn (not THAT exciting, but just knowing NYC has a third downtown...)
Smith Street - brooklyn's culinary heart, with 5th avenue coming in second
Prospect Park / Grand Army Plaze / Brooklyn Museum / Botanic Garden
Coney Island / Cyclone

All but the last are in walking distance of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Fairway brought back Kosar's bialy @ $0.60 vs what is H&H $1.40? It's bread & water! The last time I went to H&H , I Asked them,'Why did you raise the price"....The response was even better, "Because we can"

in a sign of universal deflation, H&H lowered prices a few months ago - now a $1.30. Still the best.

Search the H&H owner's name in ACRIS - almost all that shows up is "Federal Lien - IRS"

Wow. Does this mean the shops will close? What will we all do? Looks like a great opportunity for an entrepreneur to go get some of that 500 million from Goldman and make a better bagel. Blankfein can assuage his guilt about doing God's work for billionaires with a little schmear. God will thank him for saving the Bagel from extinction.

I should point out that this news only applies to the WEST side locations. As I have said all along, the East Side location is far better. Now we find out that in addition to being much more delicious, at least the East side guy pays his taxes. Long live H&H East Side!

I'll add my two cents for piazza - Bella Napoli on Madison around 30th. They have a location on 7th that is just not as good and are opening a new location on 1st & 78th. Would like to try Joes, but I can never remember when I am down in that neighborhood.
