When does a buyer's broker relationship start?

I am at the very start of my search process. I met a broker at an open house who encouraged me to get a preapproval and gave me the name of his bank contact. I got the preapproval. While I've e-mailed with this broker several time, and he sent me a group of listings once, we have never gone out looking at units. Am I obligated to use this person going forward or can we part ways?
