Can landlord hold me responsible?

Discussion about
We had a condo lease last year which had an option to renew clause. At renewal time landlord wanted more rent than in the option to renew clause, we wanted a termination option with 30 days notice. We had verbal discussions, but did not sign a new lease. We started paying higher rent. Now with 4 months left on the lease, we gave a 45 days notice due to job related move. We found a new tenant who signed a lease, however subsequently backed out before paying a deposit. Who is now responsible?
