Replacing Pre/Postwar Doors

Hi: I have viewed many pre and postwar apartments on sale with old metal door frames with attached hinges and many coats of white paint. I’m interested in other people’s experience with updating these doors. Did you restore the existing frame by stripping paint off existing frame and hinge hardware and just replace the door? Or did you remove the entire door, frame, and hardware and install new? Cost difference between the two options? Thanks.
