Discussion about
Hi - any recommendations on a good packer and mover- who wont damage my goods, is insured etc?
Do a discussion search on this board on the topic of movers. There are several threads that discuss this.
For better or worse,I've worked for moving companies for the last 35 years. To me it seems obvious that recognition of a few simple points can save people looking for movers a lot of time. First of all, whether you're using a low cost mover or a high cost mover, if you haven't moving recently, the price will be higher than you hoped, even during this recession. For this reason alone, you may want to get several estimates. Secondly, moving companies divide generally into two categories: expensive and inexpensive. "Low-cost" movers are often fairly large companies, running, say, 12-30 trucks, and doing extensive advertising. If your furniture is functional and sturdy, rather than high-priced and decorative, you should probably use a low-cost mover. Even if your furniture is delicate, you may choose to use a low-cost mover to save up to thousands of dollars, at the risk of some slight damage and imprecise organizing. One person who didn't use my company told me, "Yeah, they damaged my couch and they weren't very smooth, but it was worth it to save so much money."
High-cost movers are either "botique" movers or national brands. They're often smaller (though some branches of the national companies can be sizable.) The workers are usually paid a higher salary, and the customers are given more individual attention. The customer is given less of a "spun" presentation of the facts. Most customers come through references; there's less emphasis on advertising. The price differential, however, for, say, the pack and move of a two bedroom apartment, can be significant, maybe over $2000.
The point is, if you're comparing estimates you may be comparing apples and oranges. The low-cost movers are not necessarily low-balls and sleazy. The high priced movers are not necessarily trying to rip you off. You're better off, then, doing a more intensive investigation of a few movers than piling on the estimates. You're probably not going to succeed in getting a high-cost mover to move at a low-cost price. Finally, don't assume you're speaking to a gorilla. In my office, there are several people from ivy league colleges...That's all for now.

i've used flat rate movers and found they were terrific...
I've used flat rate twice and they did a good job. You should, however, pack your own things to keep down costs, and be there to supervise the move, particularly if you have expensive furniture.
