Discussion about
Recently viewed a few open houses in Tudor City and thought the architecture charming and the apartments full of character. The rooms are smaller, but the layouts interesting. The maintenance is highish, but includes all utilities. I would appreciate any comments about the buildings, apartments, services, and living quality. Thank you in advance. By the way we have no children and do not have a car, so these factors are irrelevant.

There are some truly special apartments with prewar features and fantastic lobbies and hallways. The pricing is mixed, but nice feel to area.

Too far away from subway, that is unless you don't mind the extra time walking.

We looked at some apartments there. The nicest ones are those facing the park. On the other side, even though you get a view of the river, the traffic noise from the freeway is pretty loud. The apartments are so small and the buildings are so big that it seems more like a hotel than a residence. (Did you know that Tudor City is sister to the Cloisters? It was built around the same time.)

When you say that ALL utilities are included I wonder if you are able to control your own heat or if the whole building is centrally controlled at the super's discretion. I would want to know the answer to that one. I LOVE Tudor City > charm galore !

Everyone that lives there seems to rave about it... If the apartment faces the river, you may lose your view once the Con Edison site is finished (2009).... The park is fantastic - but not dog friendly - which is frustrating (and a bit snobby) - The buildings don't allow you to change the windows, so you can only have them "restored" - They are all Single Pain Lead Casement windows... 2 years ago the board required that all through the window Air Conditioners be removed (LOTS of complaints for that one!)
Best thing about the neighborhood is that you can walk to the UES, East Village, Clinton, or Midtown in under 10 minutes... or..... take any subway from Grand Central (2 avenues over on Lex & 42nd)
Tudor City itself has some restarants and amenities (dry cleaner, deli, etc) but everything else is right there on 2nd Avenue...
Shop around - there are all different layouts... (from 1000sq foot beamed ceiling one bedrooms to tiny tiny 200 sq foot studios)
Tudor Lobbies are super cool if you like that old world European look....

not to attack, but how exactly do you walk 41 1/2 blocks to the EV from Tudor City in 10 minutes? Run or bike, maybe.

my bad, you probably meant just to hit the EV. even then you must be a fast walker.

No - you're right... I guess I was thinking about 22 blocks to 18th to 20th street - that would take anyone at least 15 to 20 minutes

I rented in Tudor City twelve years ago, and the heat was centrally controlled (but plenty of it, never froze in the winter). I found it to be a charming and friendly development, and though the studio I lived in was tiny, there are many larger apartments. I also thought it was conveniently located, though I lived in the Woodstock facing 42nd Street, and traffic noise could be loud (eventually, it because a kind of "white noise" to me). If you find a big enough apartment in a quieter part of the development, I'd recommend it as a great place to live.

My buddy had to combine 3 studios there to get one properly sized 2 BR....but when considered with the maint it became a tricky sale. I am thinking he had $3300 maint !

The building looked nice from the outside, and their lobby was indeed very Swiss mountain hotel like.

Folks with dogs can easily take them down the dog run that is abutting the area. Those long stairs are kind of creepy at night though.....

Tudor City is gorgeous, and we absolutely love it. The architecture is charming, and it is centrally located to everything. It is a little enclave on a hill - you're right in the middle of the city, but it is so quiet and safe....
