Discussion about
To the painter I met while looking for an apartment in midtown. You were looking for a studio/apartment with northern light. I was looking for southern light, so no competition there. You had me stand up against one of the walls in order to see if the light would work for you. I think I have found a perfect listing for you. You said you read StreetEasy, so, this post is a test to see if I can... [more]

Please--this is stupid and vaguely creepy. Either post the listing or drop it. No one's interested in jumping through hoops.

I am sorry you think this is stupid and creepy. It is neither. I am trying to help out an artist, someone who would appreciate the studio space, and use it as it was intended. Are either of you two painters? I don't think so. I'm not giving the link out to the world.

As for the hoops, they're easily answered by the person whom I met. Move along if you don't like my post.

Maybe they connected in such a way that aptmaven feels compelled to do something special for this person and would like this to play out first before everyone else jumps on it.
If so, I can see nothing wrong with that.

He's probably angling for a finder's fee...

Ha ha. No, he had both ears, as far as I could tell. I'm not looking for a finder's fee, a simple 'thank you' would suffice. I know this is a long shot, but what the heck, you never know.

It was fun to chat with the painter and share a few laughs, anything to relieve the tedium of touring open houses. I have no other way of trying to tell him about the listing, except through this board. Let's see if this works.

Ok, ok. You win. You seem like a nice guy trying to do the right thing. Hope you connect with the painter.

Julia -- my guess is they do not want to post it so they can get the FEE. How are you feeling, btw?

Cynics! Call me old-fashioned, but I think it's nice.

Thanks tina24hour. I'll let everybody know if this works. Seems unlikely but you never know.

Honestly, I'm not asking for any money. The guy was a painter and he didn't look like he was rolling around in dough. Of course, you can't tell someone's net worth by looking at them. It doesn't matter anyway, he'll need his cash to close on the place.

I found him something in the same price range as the places we were looking at and in much better condition. I think it could work for him...

ok, seriously, this has to get the title for the dumbest and most retarded thread in Street Easy history. Either post the f*cking listing or let the damn thread die.

Wow, I didn't expect such a negative reaction to my innocent post. I'm new to this board, does everybody get treated this way? Alpine, you need to calm down, this silly thread is not worth such anger.

I'm only posting here because the painter mentioned StreetEasy. Unfortunately, I did not get the guy's name or email address. I'm not posting the listing, I want to give it to the painter. This place looks perfect for a painter and is rare, I think.

I know this effort will probably fail. Still, who knows. What should we talk about while we wait for the painter to show up?

Aptmaven--

Yes, we are all VERY snarky on this board. And unfortunately, when an OP repeatedly bumps a thread that's trying to die a peaceful death, that can raise the ire of the crank contingent. It's just irritating.

My advice would be to stop bumping at this point if you get no response from the painter. It's possible he has already found something suitable and no longer bothers to read Streeteasy.

Aptmaven, Keep bumping if you want.

There are many other far more annoying threads and posters on SE.

This thread is innocuous whereas others start off nasty and contain lots of animosity - yet they keep getting posted to. The snarky posters like the snarky threads obviously so don't complain about those.

divvie,
Thanks for the support. I have only intentionally bumped twice. I don't consider responses to questions to be bumps. ;-)

wishhouse,
I'm sorry to disappoint but there is no hidden sexual agenda here. I'm a straight guy and was touring apartments with my wife. I don't know the painter's sexual orientation and it doesn't matter to me.

We could move this conversation towards the question of whether spaces that have been designed for a specific purpose should be sold to people who can fulfill that purpose. I think this place was clearly designed as a painter's studio, although I do not think it is being used for that now.

I guess the free market says to sell the apartment to anyone who wants to buy it. I just happened to run across a painter who was looking for studio space and hope that he gets a shot at it. Really, that's it.

Ok, aptmaven, I'll bite... But first--what about this particular apartment makes you think the space was specifically designed as a painter's studio? There's no shortage of north-facing studios in Manhattan; what makes this one particularly special?

Isn't it interesting how one (me, anyway) gets the idea of the OP's gender & I was thinking that maven was a female & might have a little ooolala interest in the man with the (big?) brush. Anyway, I think it's nice when someone wants to do a kindness for another & I certainly understand that feeling.

Why not do a kindness for the owner of the apt.? Maybe someone else would be willing to pay more than said painter?

there is no need for this thread. There is no shortage of north facing studios. Here's an interesting piece of information: 1/4 of all apartments in Manhattan face north. Did you know that? And 1/4 of all apts. face south. And 1/4 of all apts. face east. And 1/4 of all apts. face west!

How did you verify that alpine292?. If a large number of buildings back up to the middle of hte block wouldn't that mean that the percent of north facing and south facing exceeds the number of east and west facing?

Especially if you consider that blocks are wider east-west than the distance north-south.

To those following along at home, this post worked. I have been in contact with the painter. He had already seen the apartment. He feels that, while he could live with the light, there are buildings that now block the northern side, thereby giving you reflected light in the studio, making it less than ideal. It would have been a perfect studio 100 years ago.

Thanks to the people who were patient with me. This has been a fun experiment.
