Discussion about
I'm trying to decide whether it is worthwhile to move when my lease expires. I don't like my apartment much, and would love to move to Brooklyn, but our apartment is very large and cheap. One of the factors is moving costs. How much is reasonable to pay for moving from the UWS of Manhattan to Brooklyn for a large 2 bedroom apartment? How much could I save by packing myself? Thanks for your help
If you call flatrate they'll come over and assess and give you a firm price. I'd estimate $1500 or bit more if you have a lot of stuff. Building matters too--elevator? flight of stairs in basement to service entrance?
Also, you'll save moving in the middle of the month versus beginning or end or 14-16th. Also less money to move if you avoid peak month of May/June or whenever it is most leases expire.
We had a similar size move, packed ourselves, and it cost us $900, including a generous tip.
One other factor is lease timing overlap. Unless you move instantaneously, you will have at least one day overlap. With moving restrictions, negotiations over starting day, work schedule restrictions, it could be a lot more. Say your apartment is $4500/month, that's $150/day that you pay double-rent. That can add up quickly over a few days.
Thanks. This was very helpful
