Hi - I'm thinking of renting at the Caledonia and wanted to know if anyone had thoughts (positive or negative) to share (i.e. noisy bldg, nice size apts...). Thank you!

there is a thread all about the Caledonia so you might get some interesting insights there. The building is nice enough (ultra modern) but it's next door to a project. Average apartment size. From an ownership standpoint, I think it's seriously overpriced. Not sure what the rentals are going for.

The building is beautiful. I have friends that live there and love the Equinox and say the common areas and service are great. Roof deck alone is worth renting here and the restaurants in the neighborhood is amazing.

How do you rent from a condo owner at this building?

The Equinox there is poor, always damp, columns destroy the open flow, weightlifting machines lacking in part because of the bad layout, not enough water fountains, limited contiguous mat areas, etc.

My friend lives in a rental. Been to the Equinox, yogo room overlooks the high line and the spa is beautiful. Dont really understand the comment about the columns as the club is huge.

"The Equinox is poor...not enough water fountains, limited contiguous mat areas..."

??? Isn't that being a little prissy? In 22 years I've spent in NYC, and at NYH&RC, Equinox, and NYSC, I've never heard anyone rating a gym based on water fountains and mats.

"[I]t's next door to a project."

For someone renting, what is the point that housing project is in vicinity? The renter is not concerned with resale values and the impact on the buyer pool. If the housing discussed were the Redfern or Queensbridge projects in Queens, that's one thing. In Chelsea, from a rental perspective, the housing project should have little impact. Chelsea enjoys one of the lowest crime rates in the entire city and there is no need to ever enter the project if that is the concern. Meanwhile, the building has access to the most amazing new park the city has seen in decades. I'm no fan of buying at the Caledonia at the current prices or its utter lack of external architectural merit (it is as if the developers abdicated any attention whatsoever to aesthetic value of the huge building--every other new building in area strives for something, but not this one--it is shameful and ugly from the outside and an insult to the neighborhood), but for renting, I think it could be a fun, great place to try out.

I agree with goodman - that equinox is kind of poor! The above-ground floors are terrific and well-designed with nice views of the highline. The locker rooms are also great and pristine. However, the actual exercise/weight room which is in the basement is kind of annoying and ugly and lacks any natural light - you feel like you are at a NYSC instead of equinox. The columns really interupt the flow of the space, and it kind of smells. I prefer the Greenwich street location.

As for the Caledonia, it seems ridiculously overpriced for both buying and renting. I agree with Kylewest - it's totally devoid of design like 555 W 23rd, 520 W 23rd, the Tate etc. I love the location - you have some great, innovative buildings under construction, some beautiful pre-war warehouse conversions, gorgeous townhouse blocks, the seminary, great restaurants all along 10th avenue...
