Discussion about
Does anyone know what the requirements are to get the "SVP" status at Elliman? I had an appt to see an apt with this idiot. The appt was at 5:00, I got there at 4:55 and waited until 5:30, then I got sick of waiting and left. I got a phone call from him at 7:00 stating he was "at a closing". Well folks, I have bought and sold tons of real estate, and never have I had a closing at 7:00pm. NEVER. His message at 7:00 was that his assistant was in the townhouse waiting for me. Wouldn't a logical person either wait in front of the townhouse, look out the window, or, even better, call the person to see what was going on????

"the underlying anger at brokers and where it comes from"

seems to be more of a problem with the haters than the hated. The haters are the issue.

Upperwestrenter: I don't disagree with the idea that brokers can be sleazy. I'm trying to buy a place, and even in the course of a few months I've seen plenty of it. Righteous anger at the profession...I didn't get it before I started looking, but I certainly do now.

But this guy is catching a shitstorm for...not much of anything. Yes, it's not really about him -- it's about some generalized anger at the profession he works in. Still, it's directed at him and harming his reputation. And that's really unfair -- particularly if it turns out that he's one of the rare brokers that's actually honest, hard-working, and fair.

how are the haters the issue? You don't think something caused it?
That's like saying the people who gave their money to madoff are the problem...

My point isn't so much that all brokers are worthless, as much as things change, industries change, and I expect RE to change, big time, over the next several years. And I don't think it would be a bad change if the number of brokers was scaled way back, just like the number of bankers is being scaled way back.

And that statement has nothing to do with hate...it just seems there are way too many. My hope is the cutbacks lead to the crummy ones being pushed out and perhaps the remaining ones honing their selling skills, getting better.
When all you had to do was walk into an apt and throw any price down to rent or sell it within an hour (tops) how much work did they have to put in? Not as much as they have recently...and it's clear that is messing with some people and hopefully will push them out.

is that so irrational or outrageous?
come on, i've said far worse

Interesting, are you like the hunter who worries there are too much deer, so you charitably on behalf of nature encourage hunting? Where do you fit in to this equation?

I could care less about first time posters...if Shawn is defending himself using other names, shame on him...be a man and defend straight up...but I don't know for sure, so I don't care.

Bob, here's the deal, lets forget about shawny boy for a second...this is why I enjoy SE...we started on a (potentially) shitty broker doing a shitty broker thing, but the real issue has finally come out...this isn't about Shawn.
Screw shawn, he could quit tomorrow and nothing changes...if he was scared of his reputation being torn down, he should have done a better job of getting in touch with the client...come on, lets not be soft here. The internet exists and can be used against or for you.

this is about the entire industry and the problems in it. this is about the reaction it elicits. yes, from those of us who are "crazy" and keep hounding it, but just as much the people who say, "hey, honest mistake" or "hey, if you're too cheap to have a broker, screw you"

don't you think?

I may come on here and scream bloody murder, but I can tell you this, I listen...I don't just post and ignore...I actually take the time to read other people's opinions and think on them...you might even say I'm an open minded person (one can be open minded but still have an opinion.)

for some reason the curson on ignore this person trick doesn't work for me, but every so often a whole slew of new attackers come out.

is darren sukenik jewish? because he stood me up twice on a property downtown, both times calling my broker too late for him to get through to me (cells don't work on the subway) and with nary an apology, and these were 10ish appointments, so methinks darren just might not have gotten out of bed on time. One of those times I dragged a four year old in pelting rain to attempt to see his property, i finally gave up and the property sat on the market forever. i always wanted to tell his clients what a wonderful effort he was making on their behalf.

darren, are you out there? anything to say for yourself?

LT - work harder than whom? I'm not a broker...what do you mean by this? I'm not encouraging hunting, it's just going to happen. That's what happens when the industry contracts...do you need me to teach you on this idea? Come with a better argument or don't come at all.

Losieta - you disgust me is all...instead of talking to the subject, you bring up some random nonsense. Your new name is Glenn Beck Jr.
Keep it up and you may have a chance at winning the douchebag award from JLC.

CC -- was the question about first timers directed at me? If so -- who knows? Given that they don't really sound the same as each other and that some of them were critical of the broker, I wouldn't jump to the "conspiracy" theory. (SAWF, for example, seems upset when he types -- which I'd understand -- while others seem calm.) I'd say they're more likely either:

a) Friends of his who heard about this,
b) Clients of his who heard about this (which would be a testiomy to the guy), or, most likely,
c) Lurkers

I lean to the lurker theory. Why? Because this is just the sort of "he said, she said" Drah-Mah that draws people who might not really feel qualified to (or want to) weigh in on topics like "Inflation Rates over the Next Three Months" or "Predict Fall Inventory Levels." Particularly since there's a certain injustice about the whole thing -- an anonymous hitjob on a real person's reputation -- it seems like a prime candidate for first timers who feel like for the first time they HAVE to comment.

But we really don't know.

Gaizer - Why would he? Is being honest about your life (possibly too much in my own opinion) not enough? He's not selling anything on here, so what difference does anonymity make for those of us just posting?
My point is this: If I screw up with clients at work, there is a chance said clients will post on the internet how much I or my company suck, right? that's the way it goes.
Do you think sites like yelp.com are bad? Do you think people who leave reviews on Amazon are bad?
Should they have to post their real names?
Does being anonymous take away from the validity of the post?

So tell me how it is "interesting to say if you are anonymous"

Heck, for that matter it could be columbiacounty doing it in a "false flag" attempt to discredit the guy. (Not that that would be a likely explanation -- just that we really don't know.)

It's all nycsouth's fault. He had every opportunity to read Felker's bio on Elliman, learn that he's a disgruntled waiter who makes others wait, and figure out from his photo that he's a happy hour clown. So after ten minutes of standing in the street, nycsouth should have just gone to the corner to find him.

cc, not alpo. really. alpo's silly, with bizarre analytical mental machinations, but not that spiteful, now that he's gotten over his crime fixation. there are others who show intense feelings of anger, but i don't think alpie's it.

Falco, the thread's not about a broker not showing up ... it's about 20 imaginary friends of his showing up at this online town hall meeting and violently disrupting the discourse. The first phase of the Second Avenue subway will take people from 96th Street, through key Manhattan business districts, to Astroland. Pay closer attention.

Missed-Appointment-Gate is fascinating. Like Nixon--it wasn't the initial wrong-doing; now, it is about the 'cover up' , er, I mean, false IDs springing to the broker's defense. And the posts continue.... Will this be one of those 700-post threads that never die?

ColumbiaCounty--the roll-over-poster-number thing doesn't work on my mac laptop. :( Could you roll-over me and tell me what # I am? Curious. And while we disagree about things often enough, we also agree quite a bit I find. And on this one, we agree. Again, the broker failed to successfully tidy up this loose end which was wrong (a misdemeanor is still a crime, you know, for those who deem the slight here a minor transgression). And now look at the hot mess. Tsk. Tsk. Sometimes the best business strategy is to reach into the mea cupla bin and just eat crow. It isn't about being right. It's about enhancing your business. Wrong tone struck by broker on here. And so, we're up to post #...?

websites often add numbers like 1010 to the front of user id's in expectation of having many users (some do it to make it look like they have more than they do). it's more likely that you were the 157th user id registered. your isp or where you use your computer would have nothing to do with the number.

CC you come across as obsessively nasty. I really can't recall anything useful that you have posted. At least nyc10022, as nasty as he gets, sometimes posts useful stuff to people seeking advice.

Thank goodness Shawn stopped posting because, after his first post, he did himself no favors but at the same time I think the OP comes across as worse. You don't have to take crap from every client after making a mistake and I believe Shawn handled the aftermath of the mistake as well as could be expected.

I do agree however that he should have bb'd the op to inform them of the contact info of his assistant. That was his biggest mistake and it was a fundamental one.

What is a 'MCerittenden'? If new, this is the first time--this stupid thread--that you felt compelled to weigh in on? I don't think I'm particularly nasty on here and I try to be constructive (except for when I don't). This broker did not handle the situation well, chose his words poorly in his posts on here, and is indeed worse off than the OP because he is being discussed and has a business to run regardless of who is more wrong.

Anyhow, the number of new posters on this thread is great. More voices to share RE thoughts with on the forum. But why do I suspect most were one-time inventions never to post again?

I, like kyle, try to be constructive. i don't have a dog in this fight. i am not a broker. but i am a time constrained buyer and i too, am having trouble getting professional responses from brokers -- one in particular who is unbelievably unresponsive and is representing a troubled building. so when i read the SAWF's snarky response, it strikes a nerve. I would never treat a client like that and btw, if SAWF is so sensitive to profanity, that pretty much precludes him from working with anyone on wall street. (not that i am defending OP's alleged use of #$@#'s -- there is no reason we can't all be civil). no, SAWF's problem was not the profanity, it was his own hubris. the listing was obviously not worth his time -- so again, he shouldn't have accepted the listing.

this thread is not really about the original OP. this is a wake up call for everyone in every industry. times have changed. and ,so too, the NY real estate industry. my husband and i resent being herded like cattle through 3 million dollar apartments (200 WEA) where they don't have enough man power or time or inclination to bother showing you the amenities. My very centered, very civil husband's response was " F#$% this, get me out of here". And that was the end of that building for us. So clearly, we are not SAWF material.

when I read SAWF's posts and those of his insolent gang of new posters (got to assume they are fellow professionals?) it tickles a little bit of schadenfreude. Perhaps the last decade was a little too easy for those on wall street and those in NY RE. It will be interesting to see what happens. Attention must (finally) be paid, dear salesmen.

That said, I have met some outstanding professional brokers and I continue on this site because of the brilliant and nuanced observations of some of the brokers on SE. But really, the drama queen in me will stay glued to this thread until I see some contrition from the broker who really screwed up and refuses to admit it - minions be damned.

YES!! Thank you guys. This discussion is about our Revolution. It is about our Cause. This is not about Shawn Felker. He is just the latest excuse. This is about the People. Power to the People. Power! Power! Power!

Bev: I take it that from your number that you are a new poster also? Because your # is even after MCerittenden. And as a relative newbie, not even I have seen him/her post before. In bed with Shawn are you? Of course I mean that professionally speaking.

Yes a new Revolution. Of course, the point you are missing is that Shawn F. is the illustrious Poster Child of that Revolution until he comes clean. He messed up. He needs to fess up.

Lost in all of this is the fact that Shawn Felker disclosed price and location of the property that the OP was considering. I suspect that there's some greater obligation of privacy than he has provided.

I'm going to have to go back to my original post and say no one likes a whiner. But who knew that would apply to so so many more people, including Shawn for his reply, including columbiacounty, including all the rest of you obsessed over this.

gotta love the internet. here's one definition of the opposite of a whiner. any truth to this?

The Trophy
This person is the exact opposite of the whiner. He lives to tell you how much your life sucks compared to his life. This person would not fail to let you know that besides the fact that he makes more money than you, he is going to get a promotion, he has a hot girlfriend who makes more money than your girlfriend, he is going to get his second condo, and by the way, he is doing fine. You try not to roll your eyes as he rolls into his third accomplishment of the week.

To deal with the trophy, you should also save the compliments. Trophies are indifferent to compliments, and you know that when they start responding with "I know, right?" instead of "thank you" to your compliment. Instead, say something like, "Oh, that's it? That's all you have to tell me about your week?". If you are proficient in the department of sarcasm, use compliments. Say, "Wow, listening to how great your life is just makes me feel so fulfilling. I think I found the meaning of life. Thanks for sharing".

That's a good one columbiacounty, did you see me talk about my job, my wife, my money, or my second condo? Did I seek out compliments or even receive any where you could have measured my response against your "definition"?

but...you're convinced you know what i should and shouldn't be posting? doesn't that fit the definition? who are you to decide where and how, as you so nicely put it, where i stick my nose?

i think this is a board where people post their thoughts. why are you judging?

You posted the definition. I didn't see where my postings fit into your original definition. Nice re-try though.

Let's get back to the topic at hand: Realt-whores are scum. The one in question in this particular thread sounds like he could benefit from what used to be known in the old west as a "necktie party": A rope thrown over a tree, a short dance of several feet off the ground, and then dark eternity...

Shawn Felker should be on food stamps and should not be allowed to eat steak or shrimp.

that's funny, except it's not. while i'm no fan of the real estate profession in general, there are probably a fair number of former agents now on food stamps. say what you might about just desserts (some pun intended) certainly not all of those agents and their families deserve to be on food stamps. in many parts of the country this is a career that primarily women, including divorced ones supporting families, turned to.

Went to the doctor today, waited 5 minutes to be called by reception, then 15 minutes after that they reviewed my paper work and asked for the co-pay, then I was waiting for a half hour before I saw the physicians assistant, then another 20 minutes before the doctor.

OK,
This has to end.
This guy messed up by missing a meeting.
Let he amongst you the hath no sin cast the cast the first stone.
HE'S BROKER!!! What standard do you have for this guy?
I've been on this site for over a year. The bulk of you hold RE brokers in contempt. This is just another one...not better, not worse. The crime is VERY MILD and is not worthy of this level of abuse. Putting his name on this site and holding his feet to the fire for this level of human infraction is way over the top. WHAT A LYNCH MOB!!!
Now why don't you nice people put down the stones and go back to your homes.

Hang him!!!!

EPCC is the real problem I say.
This is a public forum...a place for people to stick their nose...everyone's nose belongs here.
So, I vote for EPCC to pull the stick from his ass

"in many parts of the country this is a career that primarily women, including divorced ones supporting families, turned to."

That explains why it's so messed up. See here: http://mensnewsdaily.com/jeffreyasher/?p=3

In summary: At IQ 130 ( 2SD), males comprise 82%. At IQ 145 ( 3SD), 88% and at IQ 160 ( 4SD), associated with genius, males comprise 97%.

Before you get too offended, know that Dwayne SUPPORTS single moms

A professional retreating to "shit happens, get over it" is unacceptable. Customers do all sorts of things. The professional has to deal with that. Not the other way around.

This thread won't die because the brokers on this thread seem so out of touch with the public they serve that they just keep fanning the flames by opening their mouths. Essentially every broker post contains a sufficiently intemperate word or phrase that ends up stirring everyone up again. You may note that 30yrs and frontporch have elected not to weigh in here. The other brokers ought to have done the same if the goal is to let this die out. And the broker in question ought to have considered his words and tone much more carefully before weighing in. He did himself no favors and his colleagues are not helping.

felcher and your people:

let this be a good lesson that you not treat prople like cattle who are to be made available at your convenience

it is sooo nice that there is a venue such as this where the likes of you can take a bit of heat for scummy practices

i have had my precious time wasted by many professionals including RE Brokers who take advantage of my intention to honor meetings and schedules

and youve dug yourselves deeper wirth the BS about "misunderstanding", and that this is just about brokerhaters

this is about a scummy broker who overbooked and cast off the poor fool who showed up for the appt that had the least potential value to the broker....the dismissive snottiness about the lousy 30 minutes and the value of the deal makes clear what were dealing with

happens alllll the time...isnt it nice that there is now a way to strike back at people who scum around like this

spend your energy improving your approach to your customers
